tylerminkis5
Is it true? On the Waterfront in Letterbox? The DVD version is in full frame and the only format TCM has played this film in before is full frame. I didn't even know it was widescreen. Why would the DVD be full frame? jrodor1
The first time that TCM played "On the Waterfront" in letterbox format was this past Feb. 29, 2004, and they aired it widescreen again on July 10, 2004 during the Marlon Brando memorial marathon. I previously posted the same question: how can TCM "own" a widescreen print when the DVD only has a Pan&Scan (euphemistically called Full_Screen) print? No official answer, but I would speculate that the Columbia Tri-Star DVD released on October 23, 2001 was produced before the letterbox version was made, and that Columbia will "upgrade" their DVD production near-term. jdtcjr
On the Waterfront was shot 1.33:1 or more correctly 1.37:1. In 1954 CinemaScope was 1 year old. The costs of equiping a theater to Cinemascope in 1953 commencing with the anamorphic lens cost ofr $ 5,5000 / pair was much. For a while producers made both CinemaScope and flat. However the change of the screen ratio required non-anamorphic to be projected at 1.85:1 to keep screen heights constant and the width wide for anamorphic. As to why columbia chose 1.85:1 for a dvd, simple-over 50 years several generations ae used to the widescreen a/r in their cinemas. jdtcjr jdtcjr
