Clu Gulager, 'The Virginian' Actor, Dead at 93

Veteran TV actor Clu Gulager has died. He was 93.

One of the actor's sons, John Gulager, confirmed his death to multiple outlets this morning, including The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times.

According to his family, the actor is said to have died from natural causes at the home of his son's house in Los Angeles, California. John also told New York Times reporters that his father's health had been declining since he had obtained a back injury several years ago.

Gulager got his start in Hollywood after he was cast as an extra in a variety of television shows in the late '50s before he eventually secured a regular roles on TV westerns as Billy the Kid in The Tall Man (1960-1962) and Sheriff Emmett Ryker in The Virginian (1963-1968).

 

According to IMDB, other notable shows include West Point (1957), The Untouchables (1959), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1959-1960), Bonanza (1972), Mod Squad (1972), Hawaii Five-O (1972-1976), The Magical World Of Disney (1973), Murder, She Wrote (1985-1987), MacGyver (1988), and Walker, Texas Ranger (1995).

The actor's claim to fame wasn't specific to just TV shows, as his presence in film took off after his character Lee Marvin was taken out by mob boss Jack Browning (played by former President Ronald Regan during his acting days) in the 1964 crime/noir film The Killers.

He also appeared in several other full-length feature films including The Last Picture Show (1971) alongside actor Jeff BridgesA Nightmare on Elm Street 2 (1985), The Return of the Living Dead (1985), Feast (2005), and most recently in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood (2019).

Gulager was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years and fellow actress Miriam Byrd-Nethery who passed away in 2003 according to IMDB. He is survived by his two sons: John (64) and Tom Gulager (57).

I liked him in TLPS and also as the federal agent in INTO THE NIGHT('85)  and as a film maker his short '69 film A DAY WITH THE BOYS is pretty interesting.

Really sorry to see him go.
