HollywoodGolightly
For anyone who watched the Arsene Lupin double feature last night - who was your favorite actor in the title role - John Barrymore or Melvyn Douglas?
markbeckuaf
Wow, both are awesome in the role...but gimme some Johnny B!
clore
Although I knew beforehand, I would have rather seen Warren William as Lupin. He was really more of a Barrymore type anyway. I din't get to finish the second film, but I love the bit where William and Douglas are trying to upstage each other with the magic tricks and the ripping of the phone book. HollywoodGolightly
Warren William would definitely have been an interesting choice. Now that I think about it, I wish I could have seen him play the part in a movie or serial.
clore
Besides, Melvyn Douglas can't even stand on his head! That scene really amazed me, I didn't realize that William was so agile.
Ray Faiola
I have a print of ENTER ARSENE LUPIN with Charles Korvin. Good film but he was pretty innocuous as Lupin.
HollywoodGolightly
I just had to look that one up. For some reason I thought the talkie Lupin movies from the Golden Age were limited to just the MGM ones; didn't realize there was a Universal version from the 40s as well... hope TCM could show it some day. Now that I think about it, I wish I could have seen him play the part in a movie or serial. William would have been a good choice inasmuch as he could do cold and egotistical very well, and those were two properties of Lupin in the novels. Physically he's pretty close (tall, fairly thin). Any Robin Hood qualities are kind of done away with since he keeps most of what he steals. The Lone Wolf series is really a lot more Lupin than the MGM films. I'll keep that in mind next time I watch the Lone Wolf movies.
