This is now three conservative women the British have elected to lead them.

That's not quite correct.  The UK doesn't elect a PM, directly or indirectly.  The PM is just whoever is the head of the party in the majority.  They voted in a Conservative majority in these three cases, and the Conservative party chose the women as leaders - in this case, without a general election, since she's replacing the ousted Boris Johnson.

In the most recent case, the Conservatives booted Boris Johnson and held an internal, Conservative Party closed election process to determine the current PM.   In the final voting round, open to all Conservative Party members, Truss won over Sunak: 81,326 to 60,399.

So, 81K Conservative Party members are the ones that voted in Truss.

And for reference, here are the number of party members in the UK.  Will probably surprise most Americans:

  • Labour - 432,000
  • Conservative - 172,000
  • SNP - 104,000
  • Liberal Democrats - 74,000
  • Green Party - 54,000
  • Plaid Cymru - 10,000
