Puppets? Really?

There are a lot of good movies in general to see on TCM, so I don't want to complain too much, but sometimes I wonder about the programming lately too.  I'm not sure about the radio/film theme. It's okay, I guess, but I've only checked out one film. The puppets--puppets are pretty creepy, but I feel there could be better themes used over multiple nights. And the series where they talk to immigrant people that is currently on--it's cool to see people from different places, but their words seem a little repetitive. If others are enjoying these series, that's cool. I just prefer it when they have guest hosts with a lot of specific knowledge to impart. I will say I thoroughly enjoyed the fashion-themed series that was on not long ago. The movies were unusual and interesting, and the guests had rich and diverse  info that only they could provide.

Can King Kong be considered a puppet or Charlie McCarthy even? I guess Charlie can since W.C. Fields threatened to throw a woodpecker on him. I mean he IS made of wood.

They already showed those McCarthy films as part of the program and I was really unimpressed because you could clearly see Edgar Bergen’s lips moving the whole time.

What do you expect from a radio ventriloquist?

"One more word out of you, and I'll slice you into a Venetian blind!"
"Why, the very thought of it makes me shutter..."  😄

If you want to sink to the bottom of the barrel you could watch the puppet-porn movie LET MY PUPPETS COME (1976).  I know of it, but have not seen it.

A viewer could also watch GUMS (1976), the dirty parody of "Jaws", which features a number of lust-mad puppets.

McCarthy, Snerd, Mahoney, Smiff, O'Day, Hugo et al are dummies. Not puppets. Now if there was a TCM FOR DUMMIES festival, that might be interesting!!!

And let's not forget George Pal and his Puppetoons. Like Kong, they were figure-animated. As was Michael Meyerberg's HANSEL AND GRETEL.

I can't find it, but there was a PARKAY  margarine commercial with Bergen and Charlie McCarthy that played on that Bergen's lips moving riff.

McCarthy and Bergen sitting at a table when Bergen says, "Charlie, there's nothing better than having fresh baked muffins with a generous dab of  Parkay margarine..."  Just then the little tub of Parkay margarine  says , "Butter!"

Bergen turns to Charlie and asked, "What was that Charlie?"   And Charlie McCarthy answers...

"I didn't say anything.  Your lips didn't move."    :D

Bergen's success was not because of his technical skills. It was because of his comic timing and brilliant material. Those Vitaphone shorts are pretty dreary. He really found his niche in radio. He was also a very fine dramatic actor.

Did Topo Gigio make the cut?

Nope, I doubt it, Moe.

Evidently you haven't heard about the recent discovery of little Topo Gigio once getting souced on Pinot Grigio and then making an unwanted sexual pass at that cute little page working the Sullivan show back around '67.

(...and thus then being caught up in this whole "Me Too" movement, Topo's public image and legacy of being a sweet and shy little rodent has become tarnished to such a degree that....)

Yeah.

(...and especially wherever there's open bottles of Pinot Grigio just lyin' around)

Coincidentally, Topo Gigio made today's New York Times Crossword, in which I learned that it took 3 puppeteers to operate him.

Clue: Number of puppeteers needed to manipulate Topo Gigio

Answer: TRE

And then there's TEAM AMERICA. An incredible (in more ways than one!) homage to the Gerry Anderson oeuvre. BTW - if you've seen the picture, there's a huge statue of Kim Jong Il.  Look closely. It BLINKS!

Does anyone know about the supposed "tell all" book by SENOR WENCES' little "hand puppet" Johnny here?(wish I knew how to get that little squiggly line over the "n" in "senor")

senor-wences-and-partner-johnny-martin-a

It supposedly exposes all the reasons behind the duo's  show biz split up.  Johnny claims not only did Wences refuse to allow him any creative input,  or any other credit, but also withheld any monies coming to him.  And Johnny even discusses the shameful abuse done to him  when Wences  would force Johnny to perform oral sex on him.  :o
