After Republicans escalate migrant busing scheme, White House condemns 'chaos'

GOP Govs. DeSantis, Abbott say they're calling on Biden to secure the border.

'.........Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis sent two planes of migrants to Martha's Vineyard late Wednesday evening, surprising state and local officials. Roughly 100 migrants aboard two buses sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott were dropped off in front of Vice President Kamala Harris' Naval Observatory residence early Thursday morning.

DeSantis said the confrontational moves were a message to President Joe Biden and Harris to do their "damn job" and secure the border.

The White House and Democrats are calling the moves cruel, accusing the GOP leaders of creating "chaos."

"There's a legal way of doing this -- for managing migrants," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during Thursday's briefing with reporters. "Republican governors interfering in that process and using migrants as political pawns is shameful, is reckless, and just plain wrong.".....

The migrants were dropped off in Washington early Thursday were met by immigration advocates from the SAMU First Response, a humanitarian nonprofit foundation in Washington, which said they are receiving food, clothing and hygiene care.

Tatiana Laborde, the managing director of SAMU, told ABC News the migrants were "extremely confused and disoriented " when they landed on the sidewalk of the residential drop-off location.

Geoff Freeman, the director of Martha's Vineyard airport, told ABC News in a phone call "nobody on the island was informed" of the planes' arrivals

"No local officials knew of this event until after it happened," Freeman said...............

Fight over border security escalates after governors send migrants to Kamala Harris’ home, Martha’s Vineyard

The latest moves by Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this week have triggered outrage among immigration rights’ groups and Democrats who have accused the Republicans of engaging in human trafficking and treating migrants like “human cargo” to score political points.

............Early Thursday morning, Abbott gleefully took credit for sending between 75 and 100 migrants to the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., where Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff reside. The move was in apparent retaliation for her comments on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in which she called the border “secure,” stoking conservative anger nationwide.

“We did [send them],” Abbott said to Lubbock radio station KFYO. “She’s the border czar, and we felt that if she won’t come down to see the border, if President [Joe] Biden will not come down and see the border, we will make sure they see it firsthand. … And listen, there’s more where that came from.”

DeSantis claimed credit for the planes leaving Texas.

He told NPR and other outlets that it was part of the state’s program to relocate migrants to a “sanctuary destination.” It’s unclear whether the migrants in the planes had any connection to Florida......

Migrants landing in Martha’s Vineyard told reporters that they didn’t know where they were, that they thought they were going to different destinations or that they were lured on to the planes with the promise of being able to get work papers..............

Elias Erales Perche said he was in Texas for four days when someone told him he would get food and shelter on Martha’s Vineyard. Another man who asked not to be identified said he came to the United States with his eight family members from Venezuela. He has an immigration court date on Sept. 21 in Los Angeles. He said he’s not sure why he was sent to Martha’s Vineyard but is now worried about how to make his immigration court date in California.

"I think this is all a ploy to get us to miss our court dates so we get in trouble with the law and they can deport us," he said.

Local officials said they were given no advanced warning about the migrants but would be providing resources to support them.............

“The Department of Justice needs to investigate Governor DeSantis for using fraud and deception to lure people out of state only to abandon them without fulfilling his false promises. Same for Greg Abbott,” U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, said in a tweet........

It's nice to see you guys taking an interest in enforcing immigration law! I do suggest reading it a little more objectively.

INA 274  deals specifically with "Bringing in and harboring certain aliens," and transporting them "in furtherance of such violation of law."

Abbott did not bring them into the country, he has not harbored them. He has on many occasions attempted to interest the federal government in enforcing its own law and it has not done so. How Garland might then punish him for transporting illegals "in furtherance of such violation" will be a very interesting thing to see.

There is, under (a)(1)(A)(iii) a much stronger case against the sanctuary mayors for harboring them. My question is should there be one criminal count per head? Or busload?

Good luck! We're right behind y'all!

PS - I just emailed Abbott to give him the heads-up that Call to Action is on his azz and shid's boutta get real. With him being the former AG he wouldn't have considered any potential legal pitfalls before contracting with Greyhound.

Let me say this about that. I have no idea why DeSantis thinks it is his business to take migrants in Texas and send them to Massachusetts when he is governor of Florida.

That being said, let's look at the larger picture.  So the Dems say - "The White House and Democrats are calling the moves cruel, accusing the GOP leaders of creating "chaos."

Really? A total of 150 migrants are causing chaos but two million migrants a year dumped in the border states are AOK?  So Texas - because this all started as Abbott's idea - is just supposed to sit down, shut up, and pay for the half a million migrants a year coming through and settling in their state - migrants who are largely unskilled labor, indigent, and illiterate in their own language,?  I think not. The next load should go to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and maybe a couple of busloads to Aspen, Colorado. I love the smell of elitist hypocrites in the morning.

And if the Canadians want to chime in and scold me or my fellow Texans, I will point out to them the long list of requirements to emigrate to Canada, which includes 13 thousand dollars per immigrant and  also includes money for every member of the immigrant's immediate family even if those family members are not entering Canada. I'm sure they make exceptions for humanitarian purposes, but the point is that they would be exceptions and not the rule.

Human trafficking. Unless the aliens said they were forced onto the plane, or DeSantis forced them to perform a specific act or labor, or pocketed any money from them, that one won't fly. (That's a pun.)

I'm also pretty sure he knows how to interpret his state's budget rules.

Biden officials to discuss "litigation options" over migrant buses

.......The actions by DeSantis and other Republican governors are viewed as publicity stunts intended to draw attention to Biden's handling of the border crisis, rather than provide solutions that would address the realities of the strained immigration system.

  • Border officials are now encountering an average of 8,500 migrants and asylum-seekers a day — a strikingly high number, according to government data provided to Axios.

What they're saying: "We continue to urge states to coordinate closely with nonprofit organizations and local governments on efforts to facilitate voluntary migrant transportation. Failure to coordinate is irresponsible and creates unsafe conditions for vulnerable migrants as well as the receiving jurisdictions," a DHS spokesperson told Axios.

Zoom out: Migrant shelters and border patrol in El Paso, in particular, have been overwhelmed by large numbers of migrants and asylum-seekers crossing the border.

  • Many are arriving from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba — countries plagued by political and economic instability. Chilly diplomatic relations make it difficult for the U.S. to return migrants from these countries if they do not qualify for asylum or other statuses in the United States.
  • The situation in El Paso — as well as the overall surge in Venezuelans, Cubans and Nicaraguans at the border — is expected to be discussed in the high-level Friday meeting, according to officials familiar with the agenda.

What to watch: The Biden administration has long considered plans to use its own federal resources to more quickly move migrants away from overcrowded border areas to be processed closer to their final destinations.............

God, the reporting on this incident is so obtuse.

Look, migrants. The rich people are your friend. They took in FIFTY of you and for A WHOLE DAY!

DeSantis gave his opposition an easy win with this one though.

On the one hand there's the issue of thousands to millions of jobs available but nobody is willing to take them.  And on the other hand you have thousands of people who would be willing to take on ANY job and not complain.  So why ship them anywhere?  Let 'em take those wait jobs, restaurant and service jobs that whining Americans refuse(for some reason) to and help keep all those eateries, bars and other small businesses from going under.

And if Texas is so upset about immigrants "spilling" over the Texas border, why not insist the Texas governor spend all that taxpayer money in securing his border instead of using people as political pawns ?

Greg Abbott.  Governor of the "great" state of Texass.

Because it is all about getting votes and contributions, not solving the migrant problems in those states.  Also, about raising one's position in the run-up to the 2024 presidential race.

Like your spelling.😀
