ironworks777
Looking for the name of a movie from the late 50s that took place in Brazil during Carnaval about two doomed lovers (what else?). The music is fabulous! I saw it very long ago, but I wish TCM would play it.
musicalnovelty
I believe this is the movie you're asking about: "Orfeu Negro", better known as "Black Orpheus" (1959). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053146/combined

musicalnovelty
You're welcome! It's a favorite of mine, too. I have the LP record soundtrack album, plus a couple of lobby cards from it. A sad coincidence that the two leads both died a few weeks apart just last year.
hlywdkjk
A pleasant coincidence is that the film is showing on TCM this month. It is on "TCM Imports" Sunday, November 22nd. http://www.tcm.com/thismonth/article.jsp?cid=253504&mainArticleId=253501 Kyle In Hollywood
MovieProfessor
It definetly sounds like the 1959 best foregin film "Oscar" winner, "Black Orpheus." If there's anything to remember about this movie, it's the renown music by bossa nova legend Antonio Carlos Jobim. He wrote the songs with another great Brazilian composer and exponent of the bossa nova, Luiz Bonf?. The two most famous songs are "Manh? de Carnaval" and "A felicidade" that have since gone on to become symbolic of classic Brazilian bossa nova music. What's obvious to remember about this movie is the opening sequence of the Carnaval and the ferry boat as its sails across the harbor of Rio de Janeiro. This is always a sure give away that it's "Black Orpheus."
