RAMBLES Part II

Jack, if you are referring to the picture on the right, that is not Loretta Young but Joan Crawford. The others of course are: Claudette Colbert, Vivien Leigh, Carol Lombard and Doris Day. The picture on the bottom left I think is either Jeanette MacDonald or Ruth Chatterton. I cannot see it well enough to be sure who it is. I wish there were pictures of him with Loretta, Jean Harlow, and Norma Shearer. But I love seeing what we have as long as Gable is in the picture!

I can't believe I left *The Hucksters* and *Call of the Wild* off my list!!! How delightlessly idiotic! :D

butterscotchgreer has inspired me to watch *Adventure* again, though it was not a hit with me. Except Joan Blondell, I loved her and Gable's scenes with Thomas Mitchell. I love watching men on boats! I always dreamed of marrying a man with a boat. Of course, I'm thinking of a 50ft ketch and I'd end up with a tuna barge. :D

Jackie,

Thank you for the loverly compliments! I love that picture of Greer and Gable. It's so funny, yet kind of sexy. Yes, that picture is with Loretta Young when they were on the set of Call of the Wild.

They made another movie together, that I find ultimately a really cute one. Its called Key to te City. I love it when they go to a party dressed up as children. Heehee!

There are some rough patches at the beginning.... Greer is not a very warm character at first and I wasn;t sure it was going to work out in a pleasing way. Plus, Joanie is a pip, as someone told me recently!

I hope you get a nice yacht! No saxophone player, but a millionaire who looks like Gable, not Joe E. Brown.

I'm all in, gals, I have to get to bed so I can get up and get my house spotless tomorrow so my girl can wreck it having a sleepover on Friday. Nighty night! :x :x

Don't be silly! You could never be idiotic! You au are perfection, dahlink! I love those two movies! They are so delightfully wonderful!

You people make me blush an aweful lot! Wy is it that I can never make you blush? heehee!

I always thought Adventure was such an underrated movie! Why wasn't it a hit with you the first time? It does start off a little slow, though. I will admit that. But when Greer comes on screen, she just lights it up wiht her feisty temper. Whew! I'm surprised she didn't smack Gable when they first met. Heehee! And I usually don't prefer Joan Blondell in most of her movies, but she is really funny in this one. She really proved to be the comic relief with her bouncy, very flighty outlook. She really proved me wrong about her acting overall with her performance in this movie, because I could never get used to her acting style with other performances. She became extremely likable! :D

Sorry Jack!

And in response to "butterscotchgreer", one of the reasons that Adventure was not a hit was that audiences didn't feel there was any chemistry between Greer and Gable. It was Gable's first movie after he returned from WWII and the studio advertised it as "Gable's back and Greer has got him." So, the public was expecting something that they just didn't experience. And there was a good reason why the chemistry wasn't great - there was absolutely no chemistry between them off-screen. Greer thought Gable was crass and a brute, while Gable thought Greer was a snob. They didn't get along at all, and absolutely had nothing to do with each other off screen. I have to admit, I felt there was something missing - it is not one of my favorites. But MGM had these 2 great stars and I guess they tried to capitalize on their stardom. It obviously didn't work!

Welllll Jack, Scotchie, Miss G., I guess we're Gable's Gals or...

GABLE4QUEENS.jpg

"THE KING AND FOUR QUEENS"

I think Rohanaka likes Gable, so I'm including her too until she tells me differently.

Now look, I don't have...

the gravitas of Eleanor Parker

the sexiness of Barbara Nichols

the sweetness of Sara Shane or

the fiery-ness of Jean Willes (who I thought was Ava when I first saw this).

I guess that makes me the Queen Mother:

...And that's pretty much how I get a guy in that position. :P

OOOOOH! Well in that case, it makes perfect sense! Eleanor definitely plays dignity perfectly. Yet I love how she can also play softness, pride and bubbly all in different movies! Oh can we make a fav list for Eleanor pretty pretty please?!! Will you make one too?

Well don't ask Grimesy.

Does it look like i ever ask him such things? gee wiz, i like my strawberry shortcake without him stealing half of it. heehee!

But if you're asking me...I'd say "sweet." And genuine

Okay i'm officially blushing! :D welll i'd still say you are beautiful big T!

Oh noooo. You don’t want to do that. Jo Van Fleet is one tough cookie. And stay away from her in *"EAST OF EDEN."*

i can soften anyone up! i forced a hug on frankie and now look at him? he's just hiding it. Heehee! I actually thought she was really entertaining in East of Eden! She was so believable!

I'm afraid my list on Ms. Parker would be very very small. I haven't really seen a lot of her films. She has a great look, and a great speaking voice. I have two favorites: *"CAGED"* and *"DETECTIVE STORY."*

*Does it look like i ever ask him such things? gee wiz, i like my strawberry shortcake without him stealing half of it. heehee!*

No, I guess you don't. Ha. Lesson learned.

Oh, T! Another big laugh on this bright sunny morning! Thanks for that.

I don' t think I'm any of those four, but I still love Gable in my own quirky way.

I'd say sweet definitely describes butterscotchie.... :D

Eleanor is absolutely brilliant in *Caged.* but lets not compare ourselves to those women.... I hate to think who I'd be in that one.... ewwww!

Is it weird for me to say I LIKE Jo in *East of Eden*? And also *Cool Hand Luke, Wild River, I'll Cry Tomorrow,* and *The Rose Tattoo*. She's like the anti-Mercedes McCambridge to me. McCambridge makes me hate her, even when her characters should have a spark of sympathy to them.... and Jo, well, she makes me understand and like her characters on some level, even when they are hateful human beings. Van Fleet has a great ability to create ambiguous characters, with very human failings. People who made bad choices that made them the way they are. We can all understand that.

It's not weird for you to say you like her in *"East of Eden."* ("He tried to hold me!!!" she spits out). I like Jo Van Fleet. I like her strength. I like her fury.

I'm loathe to bring up Kirk to you, (I'm sorry, girl), but if memory serves me right, she was kind of partnered with him in *"Gunfight at the OK Corral."* She's betrayed him and is caught. I've never seen her afraid in movies (in general), but when Kirk tries to get her...and he's so *so* angry with her, yelling... I literally felt his blood vessels bursting, and Van Fleet's fear was palpable to me. All that heat and hate was exciting.

Mercedes McCambridge. Ha!!! My girl. Loved her in *"All the King's Men."* (Watch her break a pencil in two. That was enuf for me to grant her the Oscar). She's another actress whose fury warms me, even if I'm scared of her.

I'm glad I gave you a laugh. Oh, and let me tell you...that list you created of jobs you'd hate to...love to have in movies, was brilliantly categorized. I can't even touch that list. You said it all. Great job, Jack.

You are quite right. She loves him, betrays him and then decides she really loves him even though he doesn't treat her well. That scene is very intense. Kirk does a fine job transitioning from screaming to coughing. Then she nurses him back to some level of health.

I don't know much of Van Fleet but she is good in "Corral."

Chris - you should watch *Wild River* sometime. She's just superb in that one, and I think you would like the story, though the movie is a bit flawed. it's still very much worth watching.

I remember that scene in *Gunfight*... I'll have to go back and look at the movie. I never really liked it much, there is something about the movie I don't like. Again, I think it's the tone of it, cold and kind of overblown. But I do remember Jo in that one, one of the highlights for me. Isn't Deforest Kelly in that one? "I'm a doctor, Jim, not a cowboy!" :D I love him and his quiet southern drawl..

Thank you for the jog of memory, MovieMan. And that is what I was thinking of specifically, his screaming turning into a coughing jag.

JO VAN FLEET.

Some of us think she's worth a summer's day under the stars!!!!

*Wild River* doesn't appear to be on Netflix so I'll have to keep an eye out. (I did see it a long time ago but don't remember much about it.)

DeForest Kelly is one of the Earp brothers. A baby faced Martin Milne plays the youngest.

Kirk's "Doc" seems to take Victor Mature's character and then some. You don't get the sense with Douglas that "Doc" is a well read man in the sense that Mature's knows Shakespeare, but he is smart, articulate, well dressed and a man of his own mind.

SPOILER

I did pick up on something when "Doc" throws a knife to kill Lee Van Cleef. When Kirk is confronted by Lee and Lee draws on him Kirk pulls a knife from his coat collar and throws it. Well, this isn't the case as the knife is actually laid up on the bar against the edge to hide it. So when he goes to pull it from his coat it is actually already in his hand. (A little piece of business to make the scene go smoother.)

*Wild River* is in the big box of Kazan's films if you ever get a good buy on that. It's a favorite of mine, one of the few films that reminds me of the South I grew up in.

And I love Jo Van Fleet. I'll tune in *Cool Hand Luke* just to see her one scene, which always blows me away.

OH sad story! But oddly enough I haven't seen Caged yet (so ashamed of myself!), I think grandmama has it, I just have never gotten the chance yet. I know it was on TCM, and I wanted to record it, but missed it. I do love her in Detective Story, though. One of the good ones!

Have you not seen her and Charlton Heston in The Naked Jungle? That one makes me happier than a girl with a new frilly dress! So much adventure, non-admitted romance, feistiness (by Eleanor of course), pride, and scenery.

Oooh girl. Puhleeeeze. I thank you but hardly.

Oh come now, Ms Cine-modest over here. :D

Have at it girl. Jo's too scary for me in "...Eden."

You know, for the small part she had in *The Rose Tattoo,* I really thought she was quite underrated. She was even better in *I'll Cry Tomorrow.* Her confrontation with Hayward's character gave me goosbumps! What a great start to her career.

Well we know how fiery that redhead is, so to go toe-to-toe with Jo is a joy to watch. Susan worked with that other firebrand, Bette Davis, in *"Where Love Has Gone."* I'd have loved to see Jo and Bette square off in something. Fireworks galore.

OH I love Where Love Has Gone! Bette is so good at the whole controlling mom character. She kinda reminded a bit of Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate. Maybe not near as scary, but it's like she is wanting to catch up with Angela. Whew!

Seeing Jo and Bette square off would be an interesting site to see. It would be like Bette and Joan going up against each other...

I met this man when I was waiting in line to see Rio Bravo at the TCM showing in Austin and he worked in the movie industry back in the 40's - 60's and he said he got to go to some kind of after party in which Olivia DeHavilland, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were also at. Apparently he witnessed Bette and Joan get into a huge brawl and Olivia Dehavilland played refferee and got between them. I thought that was humorous. This guy said he was having the time of his life watching that argument. Heehee!

I just want to jump in and ask if any watched *Chase a Crooked Shadow* tonight? That is one of the most beautiful villas and settings (Spain) i have ever seen in a movie, and that is saying a lot. I could only wish it had been filmed in color, though the black-and-white suited the tone of the film better. A very stylish thriller. I'll honor Mr. Fairbanks' request to not mention the ending. :)

Bronxie, I thought of you since I know you like Richard Todd...and the Mediterranean (or was it the Atlantic? They said Norther Spain so I'm not sure). Anyway, they were both great to look at.
