bagladymimi
In reply to SansFin, yes there is a scene where Cary Grant looks in her purse and is surprised to see what is in there. Once Upon A Honeymoon is the film you are thinking of and they are both (Grant and Rogers) very good in it!
SansFin
I thank you so very much for the link so I could watch it and I did not have to find the DVD and guess where the scene comes in the movie. "If you give this up the Baron will know it was over your dead body". *Perfect* I also love when she is looking in her purse and you can only see her eyes. They are so very expressive! She was a great actress.
Bronxgirl48
ro, thanks for providing the ONCE UPON A HONEYMOON link! Even though I'm a Cary Grant completist, I've always stayed away from this movie. Not sure why, though. Could someone tell me, lol? I hope I'll feel differently after watching it. I watched it a couple of times in the past, but this was one of those Ginger movies that didn't do much for me. She can be hit-and-miss with me in her post-1930s movies and I didn't feel much chemistry between her and Cary. But like I said, that's my own feelings, they could change if I watched it again. rohanaka
Hi Gals.. Bronxie.. I hope you enjoy it.. I wonder if you shied away from it more from the general description of the film that I have read (in a few sources I found while googling around yesterday)becuase in the few online sites I looked in on (that had quick two or three line descriptions) it is NOT described well and sounds more like a "light" comedy (despite some of the heavy subjects that run through it off and on throughout the movie) Anyway.. I hope you do enjoy it. Miss G.. I bet maybe YOU have a better perspective on Ginger's whole career than I do and that is why she did not stand out as much for you in this one as she did for me. I am not as familiar with her as I bet you are, so for me.. I thought it was one of the better roles I had seen from her. Maybe I have missed out (as I am not much on the whole "ballroom dancing" ha, which I know is more what she is known for) and I might have shied away and overlooked some of her other performances. The two other films I have seen her in that stand out for me (probably more than this one does on further consideration) would be Kitty Foyle and The Major and the Minor.. I really liked her a lot in both those films. But I also really did enjoy her in this one as well... because you get to see her "crack wise" both AT and WITH Cary.. and yet, you get to see her face all the other emotional moments (and come out like a human being) instead of just a "gold digger" (like she first appears at the beginning) Anyway.. if you do decide to watch again, I hope you find it more enjoyable. .but then again.. that is the THING I like about movies. .they are nothing if not subjective... so sometimes what appeals to one, won't always stand out for others. Thanks for letting me bring it all up here to chat on though, little darlin'.
movieman1957
I have a book that doesn't even hint at it being a comedy. Reporter Grant meets ex burlesque queen Rogers who is married to Nazi functionary Slezak. All in the early days of WW II. Sounds like a riot. As I recall it is not as serious as that but it is no "The Awful Truth" either. I haven't seen it in some time so I guess we'll just have to dive in. FredCDobbs
>Even though I'm a Cary Grant completist, I've always stayed away from this movie. Not sure why, though. Could someone tell me, lol? It's because Ginger Rogers is married to Walter Slezak. That was the biggest mistake of this movie.
JamesJazGuitar
I find it very ironic that you use The Awful Truth as an example of a movie that is NOT serious. The movie was only about divorce. Yea, that isn't very serious. But I do understand where you are coming from. Note that the movie uses a dog (the good old Thin Man pub), instead of children related to the custody battle to help lighten up the movie. Who gets the dog can be made funny, while who gets the children would fall flat. So The Awful Truth is a great example of a movie about a serious topic that is anything but a serious movie. rohanaka
Hiya Mr. Movieman.. I think it goes back to what I was saying last night.. The thing I most Iiked about this movie.. and the way the story is told... is that what is supposed to be funny.. is. And what is not funny is handled respectfully, even if not with a "heavy handed" sense of drama and intrigue. Because HEAVY it is not.. but there are some pretty serious and even somewhat emotional (at least for me) moments where you still do get a sense that the characters in the film ARE trying to tell you something about what they think about the Nazis and Hitler (and his entire agenda in general) I am sure it could have been a MUCH darker film (with just a little bit different handling of all of the characters in general) but as it is.. it is a good mix of comedy and a bit of the more dramatic.. (even the somewhat suspenseful) Anyway.. at the risk of repeating myself.. ha (like WHEN do I ever do that?? ha) I liked this film a lot and hope you will find it to your liking too, (even at least a little)

Bronxgirl48
But of course she's probably not really married to Walter; I'm guessing they never spend the night together. He no doubt goes off to a rally or something. Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Dec 30, 2011 11:54 PM
Bronxgirl48
Slezak as a Nazi, I don't know, sounds like lazy casting to me, lol. Why couldn't they have ever used our beloved Felix Bressart as a member of the Third Reich, just for the surprise element?
Bronxgirl48
Yeah, the plot descriptions of ONCE UPON A HONEYMOON never sounded all that tempting to me; it was a Grant film I could wait on. But I'm almost certain that Cary and Ginger have more chemistry than Joan and Fred in ABOVE SUSPICION. At least, I'm hoping...
rohanaka
the plot descriptions of ONCE UPON A HONEYMOON never sounded all that tempting to me Hiya Bronxie.. that is what I found too, when I went googling around. But it may be that it is kind of a hard movie to "classify" .. is it a comedy?? Is it a romance?? Is it a romantic comedy?? Is it a drama??? (golly. is it even a suspense or war movie?) At some point pretty much off and on throughout the movie.. it is all of that (semi-spoiler warning) Slezak as a Nazi, I don't know, sounds like lazy casting to me, lol I am not too familar with him (in other roles) but he fits this one better than you might think he would.. as he is really more of a "slimy opportunist" than an actual "dyed in the wool" Nazi.. he is more concerned with what he can do to make himself look good (and gain profit and prestige from) than he is about following along on Hitler's coattails. And Re: Ginger and Slezak as husband and wife.. think "Notorious-Lite" at least eventually. She starts out just as a "gold digger" wanting all that his money could buy.. but after several eyeopeners.. (mostly courtesy of Grant's character) she comes around to find that her dream man (or his dream pocket book at least) has a lot of unsightly strings attatched. Hi, Ro I'm glad you brought it up so I can think twice about my first impression. I've changed my mind about movies more often than not after what I read here from you guys. I like Ginger when she was quite young, with a couple of exceptions later on. It's "chemical" I guess, she just doesn't quite engage me when she becomes a serious actress. I like her being a wiseacre, though. I'm sure I'll get around this and enjoy the movie better next time around. I do remember her character changing from being superficial and materialistic, to developing a conscience.

Ha.. at least your mind changes because you actually saw the movie more than once and thought about it a bit more.. Mine tends to change because I NEVER saw the movie..and was just working off of those annoying "pre-conceived" notions.. ha. (Can anyone say.. GIANT?? ) ha. That is one of the BEST parts about hanging out here with you and other folk.. you get me out of my "comfort zone" now and then and I am the better for it by getting to watch some movies I might not have let myself enjoy had it not been for your words on here. Hope you enjoy Ginger the second time around.. I think she is a pretty good mix of "wise cracking" and "serious" in this one, so maybe it will work out. :-)
bagladymimi
In response to Bronxgirl48, believe it or not Slezak does a pretty good job as a Nazi "fat cat" sneaking around Europe selling the Nazi doctrine to the different contries. He is very believable as the sleazy husband. And everybody's points about the drama and comedy have been right on target. I really want to see this movie again because I want to see the different points that I seemed to have missed. Happy New Year to everyone - you have made 2011 an enjoyable year for me. Bronxgirl48
I saw the first five minutes of HONEYMOON several hours ago, then gave it up, because I just knew when faux-society voiced Ginger picked up the phone, she'd drop the pretense while talking to a -- what else? -- borough family member. But I think, (fortified by a peanut butter, strawberry-and-pickle sandwich) I can plow through the entire movie now.
