RAMBLES Part II

hooked on Once Upon a Time, especially the guy from the Full Monty who plays Rumpelstiltskin. He's fantastic

OH... my.. GOLLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could he BE any worse??? (and by that I mean I agree!! He is FANTASTIC!!)

The kidling and I are so creeped out by him.. and yet we go around the house all the time lately in our best "impish" voice saying.. "All magic comes with a price!" UGH!! We both get the heebie jeebies just watching him. But we love to hate him all the same.

But he is not alone in the "creepy department". Good gravy, they do a good job of "darkening" up some of the old standard tales. Which I think is not TOO hard to do because really.. the Bros. Grimm are well named as most fairy tales all seem to have a "grim" side to them already.

But oh me.. I tell you if that show was ONE level "creepier" I don't think I would let her watch it with me at all. As it is, I have sent her down the hall to her room (to get ready for bed or go brush her teeth, etc) during some of the scarier parts.. like when Regina had to go to her dad to get the last ingredient for her magic spell.. (UGH!!) I tell you, those fairy tale characters are a mighty gruesome lot.

And yet some of the characters are very sympathetic.

It makes for a good mix, overall. The kidling and I have had a lot of fun watching.

Of course.. ha.. instead of calling it "Once Upon a Time.. around here we just like to call it by it's REAL name.. "The Fairy Tale Soap Opera Show" ha.. (and that title comes courtesy of the QT by the way.. and said w/ a very definite "roll of the eye" just before he heads out back to his "manly man office" (his work shed) so he can listen to the radio or rough house around with the dog.. ha.

Between this show, and Iron Chef America.. alas, we gals have him outnumbered on Sunday nights, poor fella. ha. :D

Your post had me rolling on the floor, Ro! I had a feeling you guys watched this show. We have gotten so addicted to Once Upon a Time Soap Opera Show (haha) that we can't miss an episode! Even Andrew has got into it.... he recognized the leading lady from House, MD and so he enjoys her part in it.

I like the humor, especially in the darker characters, like the evil Queen/Mayor of Storyville. It's so well told. Last week's episode was all about Rumpelstiltskin, how he got to be the evil one that he is, in the fairytale part of the story, and he was heartbreaking! I hope you saw it or can watch it in repeats - Alice even said, "Mom, I always hated him, now I feel sorry for him."

If Alice was any younger, I'd think of sending her out of the room more often, but she is also stubborn like her mamma, and she's always telling us to shush during the show, and when we tell her it's time to brush her teeth, at the last commercial break, she rushes so she won't miss anything!

Bronxie, *Once Upon a Time* is a new show on ABC Sunday nights, about a boy who was given a storybook filled with fairy tales. He looks around him at his town, and each person in the storybook is represented by someone in his town. He tries telling everyone, but no one believes him that the town is populated with fairytale characters come to life. Then, one day, his birth mother shows up, and he finds out he was adopted - by the evil stepmother/wicked witch/Mayor of Storyville. That's where the story starts. Then we have parallel flashbacks of what's going on in the modern town, back to the fairy tales that the characters are based on. it's fun guessing which characters are from what children's story, before it's all given away.

It's filled with poison apples, huntsman, candy houses, and medieval castles. The good folks are nice role models without being too saccharin, and the evil characters sometimes make you feel sorry for them. It's quite a good show, rather dark, like Ro said, with a more Grimm's Fairytale quality than a Disney feel - which is funny, because it's produced by ABC, which is owned by Disney.

Gee, I'm so out of touch I thought that was a movie, some sort of revisionist fairy-tale with maybe Angela Lansbury as a witch, lol. I don't follow network t.v. anymore, I guess that's it. All I watch are TCM, HGTV, the home shopping networks (but only when they do their jewelry shows),PBS travel programs (because the so-called "Travel" Channel is a disgrace, except imo for Anthony Bourdain) and, if my nerves can stand it, some cable news.

I am so in love with "Harry Hare". That bunny steals THE GEISHA BOY, even away from Jerry, lol.

I'll have to go and check out Harry, lol!

I watched *Downton Abbey* after Once Upon a Time last night. It's my soap opera.

Other than those shows and maybe one other night of TV, I will only watch TCM, and sometimes HGTV.. If things are really slow on TCM, I will watch AMC occasionally, but not for long. I'm spoiled!

Andrew watches Anthony Bourdain reruns every night at 6, and sometimes I watch too, if the food or the place catches my eye. Anthony is very good, he rips the right things. I wouldn't ever want to know him, but he's very entertaining, and he is very respectful of simple communities and family run restaurants. I like that, but man, what a cynic. He's right about most everything, but it would be a drag to have to try to be so hip. He did have a recent show that completely cracked me up - he did a take-off on Fellini when he was in Rome that was hilarious! His cameraman really knew his stuff, too, it looked exactly right - perfect black and white imagery.

Oops, Jackie, I meant to reply to YOU. I realize THE GEISHA BOY is channelling one's inner child to the max, but just take the plunge, lol. Don't let your brain think about it. Jerry's no Tati, but man was I laughing like a 5 year old watching him and Harry. And Barton MacLane's here too! Plus -- Suzanne Pleshette's debut! But it's Harry Hare (pipe the opening credits, the "i" in "Introducing" him is shaped like a carrot, ha!! So adorable)

Yeah, Tony always wishes he were born Italian, but he managed to marry a Sardinian! I like her, she doesn't take any b.s. from him. have you noticed? He did another b&w Fellini-esque episode -- the one I think with that "tempermental" little Sicilian photographer. Bourdain's also obsessed with Southeast Asia, Apocalypse Now, and the whole Cold War era. Love his movie allusions. He's also the only truly literate "foodie" on t.v. (have you ever heard Giada open her mouth? Everything is "yummy", "creamy", or "crunchy". But I'm probably jealous, and was so last night, when she went to Tahiti, thanks to her grandpapa Dino's legacy there. Also, she got to frolic in Capri as a child...)

I have a feeling Tony's a sweetheart IRL, but, who knows...

Don't get me started on Guy Fieri. Eeeek! I'm loving Tony's The Layover even more than No Reservations.

I'm taking Mom out for dinner soon, then I'll come back and watch CONQUEST, with COFFEE AND CIGARETTES following. Interesting double bill. Garbo, Boyer/Jim Jarmusch.

I started watching that Masterpiece Theatre series, but always fall asleep for some reason. Then there was this 21st-century thing with an updated Holmes and Watson, it was so bad I had to laugh, then turn it off. I don't know, the whole production was so "How unique this is!" Look, Sherlock with a cell phone! Blech!!! Give me fog-swirled Victorian London.

I love Tony's wife! she's hilarious! I like that she constantly berates him while he looks smitten.

I really enjoy the Layover, he was completely trashed on this last episode. I don't share his obsession with Southeast Asia.

I liked Nigella Lawson when she first showed up on tv, but now she seems more pretentious because she isn't saying anything we haven't heard.

Giada makes me jealous but she has a nice relaxed presence.

I LOVE Barton MacLane - I think maybe you just sold me on THE GEISHA BOY.

I am not a big fan of Conquest, but Boyer gives a thoughtful portrayal of Napoleon, even though I think he did not want the role.

Hiya Jackie..

I like the humor, especially in the darker characters, like the evil Queen/Mayor of Storyville. It's so well told. Last week's episode was all about Rumpelstiltskin, how he got to be the evil one that he is, in the fairytale part of the story, and he was heartbreaking! I hope you saw it or can watch it in repeats- Alice even said, "Mom, I always hated him, now I feel sorry for him

I am with Alice.. almost. It was a very "sympathetic" moment when he realized what he'd done to himself.. and his son. In his desire to save the boy, he turned into the thing he hated most. But GOLLY, it is hard to keep that sympathy going very long. What a hideous little critter he is.. (oh that voice.. ha.. and the little "dance" he does when he says his "All magic comes with a price" line. What a creepy guy..

I loved the one where Cinderella tricks him into signing that contract and he was frozen stiff. and yet he was STILL able to wreak havoc even from "jail". And OH.. the episode w/ Jiminy Cricket and his parents.. and poor Geppeto!!! (AAAAGGHHH...good gravy, don't get me started.. ha) :D

I'd think of sending her out of the room more often, but she is also stubborn like her mamma, and she's always telling us to shush during the show, and when we tell her it's time to brush her teeth, at the last commercial break, she rushes so she won't miss anything

My kidling is still just young enough she is happy to take my advice when I tell her "here comes the scary part" because she is just at a place where she still really hates seeing anything "spooky" (so I don't have to fight that battle.. yet) But I bet it won't be too much longer and she'll want to watch it all.. (oh me)

We don't ever really do ANY awful gruesome scary stuff anyway.. so I am thinking she still won't want to see blood and guts kinda shows because really, she just doesn't know what she is missing and I am keeping it that way as long as I can. But even so, I bet she'll be less willing to walk down that hall soon.. because I think a year or so ago even what I have let her watch on OUAT would have been too much for her to handle. But now that we have just turned "NINE" we are getting far too "old" for the "kiddie" stuff lately.. so I am sure it is only a matter of time. (although.. ha.. we DID just go to see Beauty and the Beast on the big screen this past weekend, so we are not quite ready to give it all up.. yet)

She and Alice are just growing up TOO fast, doggone it. (I remember when they were both so young as to like "Diary of a Wombat".. sigh.. where DOES the time go??) :-)

Diary of a Wombat, lol! I know!

Alice is acting older than she is, but I will admit here, where she has no one to act all cool for, she watched Beauty and the Beast from beginning to end the other night.

She's still at an age where she can get excited about stuff, like all the Christmas specials, and the movie UP coming on - she was so happy. But she is also getting to the age where she wants to wear makeup to school, and won't wear her coat anymore unless I get scary with her. She snuck out of the house one morning wearing MY mascara, and I about killed her - she went to the bus avoiding me, and finally I figured it out just as the bus came to pick her up. She spent all day at school worrying about what mom would do (ha! she punished herself) and came home ashen faced. She was given a warning, and the mascara was confiscated. She also got a lecture on borrowing makeup, which can cause terrible health problems. So far, with the warning, she has not worn any makeup to school. She HAS learned that it's best not to lie to mom, or ugly things happen.... the worst thing is that mom stops trusting her, causing her to be treated like a liar all the time, questioned and looked at more closely. No one wants a bear of a mom breathing down their back, which is what happens when trust is broken.

One of my uncle's girlfriends did make-up for people in movies. My mother made me go to her to learn how to use make-up because I never used any at all and I was to be traveling to other cities and she thought I should look my best. I was twenty-two.

Ottavia is the spouse Tony needs, lol. His (weird) Christmas special implied they had a spat and she threw him out of their apartment for the week-end, conveniently in time for Bourdain to find an over-the-top "hip" plotline of urban domestic holiday angst. I think his whole Southeast Asia fascination stems from the fact that he probably read a lot of Joseph Conrad in college.

Nigella is just a parody of herself as far as I'm concerned. And she makes all these complicated British dishes I'd never be able or want, to tackle. Like "The Two Fat Ladies", it's always stuff like pickled curry ginger leeks fried with two eggs and a mutton confit. But I do appreciate that Lawson is articulate and literate. Like Tony, she is essentially a writer first, then a cook. Her powers of description when communicating the essence of a dish or how she prepares it, are quite remarkable. I wish Giada would stop California-izing her menus. While I love West Coast food (I lived in

San Francisco and Los Angeles in the '70's and never had a bad meal), I'm a purist when it comes to Italian cuisine. She had one recipe I couldn't believe -- pasta with avocados. That's just wrong, I'm sorry.

Poor Barton is on the receiving end of Jerry's antics in THE GEISHA BOY. Luckily his indignant rasp is intact.

I liked the first half of CONQUEST; in fact, I thought Clarence Brown was going for a stylish, dense, von Sternberg vibe -- the opening certainly looked promising. Then it kind of dragged. Boyer tries hard as Nap, but I found him somewhat overdone (I realize power is an aphrodiasic but I wouldn't swoon for this guy, lol) and Garbo under the radar. I yearned for the historical sweep and romantic charisma of Leigh and Olivier in THAT HAMILTON WOMAN. I'm really beginning to respect Maria Ouspenskaya as a versatile character actress. She was so much more than a gypsy woman in Universal horror movies.

COFFEE AND CIGARETTES didn't always hit its mark with me, but I'm a sucker for indie stuff -- I enjoy Jim Jarmusch and his pals. Thought the last vignette, "Champagne", was the best. It reminded me of "Waiting For Godot". Very Beckett-ish. I've got to see DOWN BY LAW. I love STRANGER THAN PARADISE.

> I watched Downton Abbey after Once Upon a Time last night. It's my soap opera.

I watched a bit of the new Upstairs, Downstairs (I'm two years behind, though -- I believe it was filmed in 2010) and was shocked by Jean Marsh's appearance. "Rose" didn't look long for this world, unfortunately.

I hope you have not minded waiting for my reply. I did not wish to reply until after my bathtime when I could make a careful examination. I can assure you that if the pictures they showed us in school were correct then I am a girl.

I hope you please do not think that means I ever hesitate when necessary to show that I have balls. :)

Glad you saw THE LIQUIDATOR. I love your description of Trevor Howard -- "at his mirthless best".

I missed the two Ozus; also HAUSU. But Japan wasn't far away, thanks to THE GEISHA BOY, ha! I don't know how you feel about Jerry Lewis, lol, but Tashlin does very endearingly funny things with a rabbit named "Harry Hare". Sessue Hayakawa is also in the cast, but I won't spoil the joke. I provided the YouTube link for the movie several posts down, if you care to indulge your inner child. Enjoy!

I am sorry you missed the Floating Weeds pairing. I prefer Japanese personal dramas because they expose the characters' deepest and most innate nature. I find most American movies of the genre rely heavily on shallow people and if you attempted to delve deeply you would merely come out their other side.

I do not know if you would have liked *Hausu* It is most surely one of a kind. It is one of those movies which would take so long to explain that it is far faster and easier to simply put a gun to a person's head and make them watch it.

I am sorry to have to say I do not share the French enthusiasm for him. I am sure I have seen *The Geisha Boy* as I watched all of his popular movies in an attempt to persuade myself that the first ones I watched were simply not scripted to my taste. I liked *Visit to a Small Planet* (1960) and I feel the greatest flaw of the rest is that he was in them.

I like a wide variety of humor. One of my favorite characters is the dapper and urbane sophisticate Betram W. Wooster. There have been several movies of him. It is sad to say I can not find any on YouTube. A Golden-Globe winning actor played him in a BBC series some time ago. The first part of the first episode can be seen at:

I hope you enjoy it. You will receive extra points if you recognize the actor! :)
