My hopes were raised when Ty Power's narration describes the war-ravaged jungle as a nightmare world, but then he keeps running into lovely and charming Micheline Presle. If that's a nightmare, I'm Bugs Bunny. (or Lloyd Nolan) > > So if you're Bugs, that definitely makes Jackie, Daffy. No, nothing to get ready for, because I just might fall asleep again even before finishing this post.... I've seen several Langs at various stages of his career, but I think what links them all is a sense of moral unrest or unease, that good people have to fight the forces of darkness and tyranny, sometimes even within themselves. GUERILLA does have the brutality I've seen in some Langs -- he's not a subtle director -- but the script and the acting I found mediocre and uninvolving. and the relationship between Power and Presle awkward and undeveloped. I think that's as far as I can go this evening with my fuzzy brain. Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Jan 30, 2010 2:19 AM
FrankGrimes
You took the words right outta my mouth -- long time no talk, Charlie Brown! How long has it been, a century?? It feels like that, Bronxie. It feels like that. No, you're the only one daffy around here. I wish! I never even heard of YOU AND ME. GUERILLA is pulpy, melodramatic and very brutal, all Lang elements to a degree; unfortunately the actors, including Ty, just seem to be going through the motions. And, hey! Micheline sings the French "Irena" Christmas lullaby from CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE. You've actually piqued my interest. I have had low expectations for the film. Joan is so touching. "Jerry" is such a sweetheart. She's definitely my kind of gal.

I would never have guessed. It just wasn't exciting, right? When you'd think how could it not be? I completely missed Micheline (who I like) singing that tune. She sure managed to look perfect during WWII, didn't she? "..pulpy, melodramatic and very brutal, all Lang elements to a degree..." You have the most amazing ability to nail things right on the head. I have always had that impression of his movies and never could find an apt description. That's it. Perfect! P.S. If your baby looks like George Sanders, don't kick about it. I hope you feel better soon...what movie can we suggest you watch to wake up...have you seen Murnau's The Last Laugh? A silent may put you to sleep but I was impressed with it (see my post in "Western Rambles"---yes, that's right---western); it's now my favorite movie by the director (I like it better than Sunrise). When you'd think how could it not be? At the beginning, Ty is reporting to his superior officer, who makes light-hearted but down-to-earth comments about the mission. If I hadn't seen the opening credits, I almost would have sworn this was a Ford movie I'd never heard of. > > I completely missed Micheline (who I like) singing that tune. She sure managed to look perfect during WWII, didn't she? Ha! She had an American 50's housewife look about her, even though she's French. She looked like a mix to me of Giselle MacKenzie, Kim Hunter, and unfortunately that untalented but otherwise attractive May Wynn, from THE CAINE MUTINY. > > "..pulpy, melodramatic and very brutal, all Lang elements to a degree..." You have the most amazing ability to nail things right on the head. I have always had that impression of his movies and never could find an apt description. That's it. Perfect! Why, thank you! I think those attributes of Lang's come in part from his German Expressionist background combined with his noir/thriller storytelling auteur sensibility. > > P.S. If your baby looks like George Sanders, don't kick about it. LOL -- you're right! And it would be speaking beautifully dictioned English right from the womb. > > I hope you feel better soon...what movie can we suggest you watch to wake up...have you seen Murnau's The Last Laugh? I did see your wonderfully illuminating and eloquent post on the Murnau-Ford connection with those two films, something I didn't know before. You are so knowledgeable about Pappy, it's a revelation. I love the German silents and want to see THE LAST LAUGH. See you later this evening -- I'm going shopping with Mom soon! Did you see MY SON JOHN? What a mess! Poor Robert Walker. I immediately wanted to see him as sweet befuddled fresh-faced Eddie Hatch pursued by Ava Gardner, in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, to take away the creepiness of Bob's last film. (I love OTOV -- it's a favorite, and also with Eve Arden and Tom Conway) Mom, on Helen Hayes, in MSJ: "I know she's supposed to be a fine actress, but I thought she over-acted terribly". What did I miss? ohg you know, just the usual...frankie claiming to be the gentleman and turning out to be frankenstein....the ephalents getting loose, tea parties galore.....the fun stuff! butterscotchgreer
Good afternoon Scooby-doo! THERES ( ) no helping you! Ere the big letters suppose to mean something? heehee! Why are you so negative all the time? Aren't you suppose to always look for the silver lining? Goodness! The motorcycle never leaves my mind! Well that explains a lot! Celine is prettier than the silly motorcycle, you meanie! I've never had a cat! and who are you referring to as horrible girls? Like I need to point them out! They are clearly evident... and abundant. Yes, please do point them out for me! Say their actual names for me. Heehee! That sounds like Molo. He's the one who couldn't tell the difference between Lassie and Greer. I was not referring to innocent Larry! I was referring to you! Thats not even what he said! Who? Agatha wrote it! GASP! you take that back! April isn't Agatha! I did not! Those are from Random Harvest. That's the film where Greer randomly shoots innocent gentlemen, thusly harvesting them. It's a scary film. And I thought you were the Greer authority around here! You're slipping! No, it didn't go that way! She doesn't actually harvest men in the movie, Frankie, oh my goshly! How is it scary? Scary is seeing blood and gore! Where are my long black gloves?!! Huh? He didn't faint! Greer filled him full of lead! It's a good thing that nice young girl nursed him back to health. I'm glad they got married. You, sir, obviously did not watch the movie! Greer never shoots anyone! She's too good for that! She teaches the bad guys a lesson! Smithy is not a bad guy, hence the reason why she takes care of him and marries him! honestly! Which young girl are you talking about? Smithy didnt marry anyone but Paula! No! That's the crazy story Greer tells the cops. Sweet Fantasy Island!! Greer never lies! I don't have it on DVD, That's probably a good thing! or I would show how horrible Greer treats innocent men. And look at how she has influenced you. To think, you once were sweet. Now you're like Miss G. Greer has only influenced me in the best ways! Miss G, as you so delicately put it, is not a mean person! she is perfectly sweet! Just look at her expression when she finds out Smithy is alive: she was making that expression for another reason! You know you loooove this movie! Come on, all you have to do is admit it once! And don't think I didn't notice that she's wearing gloves to conceal her guilty hands. Horrible influence! She was out on a cold day! I'd wear gloves too to keep my hands warm! Holy Joe, Frankie! Will you ever stop this horrid meanness!?.....dumb question, never mind. heehee! molo14
Hi ya Theresa, *for the party in this thread silly!* Oh yeah! My presence seems to clear the room though! *no, the part where i strangle frankie and make it look like an accident of course! heehee!* Frank has more lives than an old alley cat. I have to admire that! *ohg you know, just the usual...frankie claiming to be the gentleman and turning out to be frankenstein....the ephalents getting loose, tea parties galore.....the fun stuff!* Well some hot tea sounds good right now. I am snowed in and it's FREEZIN' outside! This is our second big storm this winter. It's crazy. A lot of times we don't get but a dusting of snow all season. I can't wait for summer, so I can complain about the heat! They have already closed my work Monday so if the power holds out, I'll be around more. A little mini-vacation. One thing about living in Richmond. The whole city shuts down with just a little snow so with all this accumulation the whole place is paralyzed! This is how I felt earlier today:

molo14
That's a nice thought! I watched *Blonde Fever* again. I liked it a little better this time. Gloria was cute and Mary Astor was good. I also watched *It's A Great Feeling!* with Jack Carson, Dennis Morgan and Doris Day. It's not that great a film but since it's all about poking fun at Carson it always cheers me up. I like all the cameos too. Then I watched *Paradise for Three* with Frank Morgan, Robert Young, Edna May Oliver and Mary Astor who was being deceitful in trying to snag a rich husband. What a strange career Astor had. Very up and down. I didn't care much for *The Cockeyed Miracle* another one I recently viewed. It was a pretty one note film. So anyway nothing but fluff for me, I have *Scarlet Street* waiting in the wings though. I've also been wanting to watch *Leave Her to Heaven* again. I have to check to see if I have *Man Hunt* as well.

movieman1957
We got around six inches yesterday. My bride worked in the morning and my daughter in the PM. I didn't have to leave the house. molo14
We got a little over 13 inches here. I generally subscribe to the Oscar Levant theory of exercise, so shoveling snow is not something I relish. After twenty minutes, I was tempted to hire one of the neighbor kids, but I was shamed when the lady next door started outpacing me. I was able to man up and see it through. Once I got back in the house I couldn't see a thing. Was I finally having that stroke? Nope, just my eyes readjusting from the brightness of the sunshine on the snow. I know. I know. It's sad.
