Bronxgirl48
Best wishes for your birthday, Scotchie! Go ahead and misbehave! (I tried getting this down to manageable size but am hopelessly inept. Perhaps someone with actual computer skills might oblige to keep me from screwing this special occasion up) Edited by: Bronxgirl48 on Sep 5, 2013 1:24 PM
butterscotchgreer
Thank you Kathy and Wendy! How thoughtful! I'm picturing those cupcakes as being gluten free. mmmm yummy! Heehee! Let's have a tea party! I love the Loretta picture! <3 <3 I have a HUGE smile on my face now! YAY!! I was actually planning on watching a Loretta movie tonight, because it's one I haven't seen yet and am SUPER excited about it! It's Road to Paradise. I've have most of her later films, but now i've been trying to find her early EARLY ones. I found a few on Amazon, so i squeal in excitement a few times when I find more. Heehee! Bronxgirl48
Love that gorgeous photo of Loretta and Don from the 1936 RAMONA. As you know, I think they're wonderful in this movie!

You like Ramona too!? How cool! I find it interesting how many people associate her with that film. It's not her biggest film and yet it's so wonderful and everyone knows it. I was quite taken with both their performances, because you wouldn't necessarily think Loretta Young and Don Ameche as first choices to play Native American/Spanish lovers, but these two make it work, because they're so natural and understated as actors. Now, I'm not happy seeing Loretta in that unflattering black wig, but she's so lovely I can overlook it, lol. JackFavell
Love that clip. Wishing they would play the whole movie on TCM or youtube. I haven't seen it since I was a little girl, and don't remember any of it. except I have an abiding love for Don Ameche that remains with me to this day. Bronxgirl48
Couldn't agree more, Jackie! Am dying to see the complete movie, anywhere! And I share your feelings about Don Ameche. Tremendously underrated.
butterscotchgreer
Yep, ask Frank. Bring an oil can. i'll go right out and get my daddy's WD-40 and bring it to the party. Heehee! Yes! Now, I'm not happy seeing Loretta in that unflattering black wig, but she's so lovely I can overlook it, lol. Oh, I know, the black wig was so bad. The fact that they were so believable as Native/American lovers always gets me. That doesn't happen very often for me when it comes to pretending to be a different race for a film. Even when you first start the movie, you never really question it, or at least I don't. I watched Otello (1965) for the first time the other day and the first time Laurence Olivier came on the screen, I immediately froze with question. It was sooooo odd. I mean, I ended up loving his performance (it was pretty solid), but it took me a while to warm up to him in the dark makeup...like a good half hour into it. Anyway, Loretta and Don always had great chemistry together. I also LOVE them together in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell.
JackFavell
I remember I used to watch *The Story of Alexander Graham Bell* on TV every time it was on, as a kid. I just loved it, and would wait excitedly for that crucial moment when he would cry out, "Mr. Watson, Come here, I want you!" I would love it if they could do a *Don Ameche SUTS day* next year, but I have no hope, because of his studio. My daughter Alice wants a Guy Kibbee day. Those films would be easier to get the rights to....
Bronxgirl48
Yes, Frank will appreciate your thoughtfulness, lol! You know, Tyrone Power is probably the only other actor from Fox who could have been believable as Alessandro, probably more so looks-wise than Ameche, but I think he might have been somewhat -- oh, I don't know -- austere perhaps, overly serious, trying a bit too hard, whereas Don always adds a light touch without being "lightweight". That's a gift. I've never seen THE STORY OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL; I do know that's the film Don for better or worse became so identified with -- a phone was actually called an "Ameche" during those years! I somehow believed Paul Muni and especially Luise Rainer in THE GOOD EARTH. However, DRAGON SEED really strains credibility, lol. Oooh, now you make me want to watch Otello with Larry. Maybe it's on YouTube.

I just loved it, and would wait excitedly for that crucial moment when he would cry out, "Mr. Watson, Come here, I want you!" My copy of *Bell* is from grandmama's VHS and it's so poor of quality, but I have watched it countless times, because it's just that good! It was one of the first Loretta films I ever saw. You know, I can't actually remember what the first Loretta film was that I saw. I remember the first few. odd. Anyway, I do remember that line and so love that someone else has an appreciation for the film as I do! I also love that Loretta's sisters are in the films with her! I would love it if they could do a Don Ameche SUTS day next year, but I have no hope, because of his studio. Oh don't even say that. It's way too much to hope for! Heehee! I've been wanting them to do that forever, along with every other Fox actor/actress. My daughter Alice wants a Guy Kibbee day. Those films would be easier to get the rights to.... Now that would be pure awesomeness! tell your princess that she has good taste!
butterscotchgreer
Yes, Frank will appreciate your thoughtfulness, lol! Oh yeah, i'm surely he would jump with excitement... I've never seen THE STORY OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL; I do know that's the film Don for better or worse became so identified with -- a phone was actually called an "Ameche" during those years! You make an interesting alternative to picture. I could definitely see Ty with his looks in that character, but I agree with you about Don making it look effortless. I somehow believed Paul Muni and especially Luise Rainer in THE GOOD EARTH. However, DRAGON SEED really strains credibility, lol. Oh, i'm right there with you on Dragon Seed. I didn't ever believe that for a second. I know Rainer won her academy award with The Good Earth, but I really didn't believe her in that one either. I liked her performance, but her look was just off-putting the entire movie to me. One where i ironically did believe it is Alec Guinness in A Mojority of One. He was so cute in the role, you can't help but loving him to pieces. Oooh, now you make me want to watch Otello with Larry. Maybe it's on YouTube. You know, i wonder if it is on Youtube. It's very worth the watch. Maggie Smith is MARVELOUS as the beyond gorgeous female lead, playing Othello's delicate wife. But a side of caution, when Larry comes on screen for the first time, take a few seconds and give it a chance. I never thought any other performance of his could top Hamlet and some of my other favs of his, but this one did for me. However, I did spend the entire movie looking for that dark dark paint to rub off on anything and anyone. Heehee!
Bronxgirl48
I see bits and pieces of OTELLO on YouTube but not in its entirety, tarnation! From what I can see, he looks good with that paint, lol. Hope it wasn't too drippy. Uh-oh! I love Roz in A MAJORITY OF ONE and actually think she's believable, but oh dear, I've got to tell you I feel embarrassed for Alec! I enjoy his character but what was he thinking with that accent? Oy! I remember on "Bewitched" they did a variation of this movie -- Aunt Clara meets a client of Durwood's -- a Japanese businessman who falls for her because she reminds him of his beloved late wife. He gets serious, but doesn't realize that Clara still carries a torch for her old (very old) flame Ocky, lol. But she accepts his dinner invitation and dresses up like a geisha. Ahh, those were the t.v. days....

From what I can see, he looks good with that paint, lol. oh no!! What a shame! Someone needs to upload it! I just recorded it when it was on not too long ago. It's a very captivating film. I tried multi-tasking while watching it, and I didn't get anything else done that I needed to, because I was so focused on it. geewiz! I guess that's a good thing. Hope it wasn't too drippy Could you imagine? his whole body was covered with that stuff? with stage lights and constantly moving? he must have felt aweful and hot. I honestly kept looking for it to rub off on Maggie's face or arms when they kissedand hugged. I don't know how they kept it from smudging. Uh-oh! Poor baby, you can tell he really tried with the accent, but to no avail. I still love it! It's like Mickey Rooney's accent in Breakfast at Tiffany's. OY VEY!
