MissGoddess
Wow, Fred, I don't suppose you have a link to that poster image, do you? Because it doesn't ring a bell for me and I'm dying to see it. I have the Ford at Fox movies with Willie as well as both of the Will Rogers box sets. When I'm blue, especially, his movies really perk me up and give me such a good feeling about life.
butterscotchgreer
HEY LARRRRRRRRYYYY!!!! I missed you...I missed all of you actually! Heehee! ((And I'm not even going to mention that Frank fessed up that he has nearly every Greer Garson film ever made? )) Too bad, you mentioned it and now I will ne ver let Frankie forget it. it's a real pity he doesn't really like Greer. heehee! Even though, technically Greer is the best and prettiest...although I might be a tad biased. But you know what I mean. I do still have my long black gloves in case he gives us any trouble.....muwaahahahahahaha! Hope you have been doing well! I have, I have! How have you been doing with everything! butterscotchgreer
No. But I did watch Hollow Triumph the night before. I didn't like it. Why not? It's very much your type of movie. Someone told med you have every greer movie or something like that. is this true or dost thou ear not comprehend? You brainwashed me! GASP!! Just for that, i'm gonna tie you down and make you watch the video! Heehee! I'm sweet and innocent, remember? OOh, I actually got to watch In a Lonely Place at the Paramount a couple weeks ago. It's even more terrifying on the big screen, watching Gloria be mean to poor Bogie. Heehee!
fredbaetz
Sadly Miss G, once the artical is sold the picture of it comes down.. I don't know if you're familiar with eMoviePoster.com They auction off all kinds of movie memorabilia, all authantic, no repos unless stated. The picture of Ford, Wayne, Trevor and the others also had an older woman, dressed all in black, like a widow. It might have been Rogers widow.. If I ever run across it again, I'll try and post it... Your comment makes me want to start looking into his films. I may not wait for December. Hi Mad Hat, He's so unique, so himself. He doesn't play characters so much as just variations of himself and that's his charm and his gift. Too Busy to Work, David Harum, Ambassador Bill, They Had to See Paris, Life Begins at Forty and, of course, the Ford films, are my favorites that I've seen so far. I'm really excited about A Connecticut Yankee because it's Mark Twain and I've always felt there was a kinship between Will's humor and the author's. I like to think if Will had never been born, Twain would have invented him.
MissGoddess
Kyle those are wonderful handbills, especially the top one. I've never seen *Handy Andy* or *Down to Earth*. butterscotchgreer
Welcome back, T! What a great movie to see on the big screen. I got to last year and really enjoyed it. What else have you seen at the Paramount this summer? Hey dahlink! it's good to be home! I loved seeing Gloria on the big screen for a change. It was really exciting actually, and I got even more emotional than I normally do. I don't know, something about seeing old movies on the big screen makes them come alive for me. It'slike i'm actually there. I love it! There have been quite a few I have seen thissummer there.... *The Thin Man Goes Home* *Another Thin Man* *Splendor in the Grass* *Psycho* *Frenzy* *Breakfast at Tiffany's* *Roman Holiday* *Giant* *Adventures of Robin Hood* *Shane* *The Searchers* *Rebecca* *Wuthering Heights* *In a Lonely Place* *Broadway Melody of 1940* *The Band Wagon* *Captain Blood* *Bride of Frankenstein'Top Hat* *A Night at the Opera* *Ferris Bueller's Day Off* *Pretty in Pink* *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* *Out of Africa* *Sunrise* ..and tonight I went to see *West Side Story*. I could have also gone to see *Wings* with Angie, but she went without me, because I had something going on that night, I don't remember what it was, though. Heehee! Oopsey! There are still going to be a few more before summer ends and then of course Gone With the Wind to close the summer series at the Paramount like they do every year. Tradition, naturally! butterscotchgreer
Hi Theresa!!! Good evening friend!! I have been doing well. Thanks for asking. Well how cute! That?s great! OOh, I actually got to watch In a Lonely Place at the Paramount a couple weeks ago. Lucky!!! I had wanted to see it for the longest time on the big screen! I still have yet to see one of my Greer movies on the big screen. It?s so sad that no one ever recognizes her brilliant pieces of work. Have you ever seen any of your favorites on the big screen? It's even more terrifying on the big screen, watching Gloria be mean to poor Bogie. Heehee! Gloria's a sweetheart. An indecisive one, but still a sweetheart! Heehee! That tickled me! MissGoddess
You saw FRENZY at the Paramount?? You're a braver lass than I. I don't think I could have sat through it. molo14
Hi, I've seen quite a few of my favorites on the big screen over the years, Gable, Shearer, Harlow, Wayne, Bogart, Bergman, Astaire, but nothing recently. Despite having several restored movie palaces, classic films are rarely screened here in Richmond. Most of the old theaters have been converted to live venues and the one that still shows films exclusively operates as a second run theater. They used to have a fall classics series, which I loved, but that disappeared many years ago. I don't remember them ever showing one of Greer's films though. We had one new theater that started showing some older films on Sundays but they stopped before I took advantage of it. Probably my fault that they stopped! I should have went sooner!! So, you folks in the bigger cities are lucky!
MissGoddess
I love seeing the classics with an audience in a theater. It's such an experience, because it's so different to seeing a first run feature, even a really good first run feature. Maybe because the audience is made up of a different kind of movie goer, or going to watch a classic gives you a different charge, a different level of expectation than when you go to the multiplex. What I do know is that it's a lot of fun and I wish I could go more often than I do.
molo14
I agree. During the old classic series it was definitely a different kind of audience. Mostly classic film fans and curious newcomers. I certainly got a charge from it. I still remember certain moments, like when the audience broke out into spontaneous applause after Garland's Trolley Song or after the scene in *Dinner at Eight* where Harlow and Beery go at each other. The moments of collective laughter or collective sighs. It's a very special experience and so much fun. I miss it.

It's a very special experience and so much fun. I miss it. "collective laughter or collective sighs"....that's saying it. For many of us in the audience will know what's coming or we'll know the performer so well that when they make that gesture or say that dialogue we've been waiting for, it's even more fun sharing the expectation with a group. MissGoddess
Hi, Peacemaker! > But NO!! I did enjoy it a lot. And I FREELY admit it is more or less just a "fun" film.. there are not really going to be a whole lot of 'deep" thoughts that one has to think in order to appreciate this movie.. ha. But that is OK. While I DO like to ponder my characters sometimes and get inside their heads and try and find out what it is that makes them tick.. sometimes I just like to sit back and enjoy a fun story.. and this is what Blood Alley was for me. > I keep thinking about the backstory on BLOOD ALLEY when I watch it. Originally, Robert Mitchum was playing Wayne's role, and I wonder how it would have been with him and Lauren? Something happened, he got in a disagreement with the director, William Wellman, and so the producer, John Wayne, had to step in and take over the part. And then I am constantly on the look out for *Anita Ekberg* who is credited but I can never recognize or spot her in the movie! Have you? I also like to compare and contrast Duke and Lauren here in this movie with their later film, The Shootist. CineMaven
Why Baby T. How have you been? Hope all's well. I've seen a number of classic films on the big screen, the last being "All About Eve" at NYC's Ziegfeld theatre, when TCM hosted an event there. Unfortunately I just blew the chance(s) to see some Hitchcock films at the Symphony Space. "Rear Window" and "The Birds" will be shown tonite. But another dream screening was to see "West Side Story" and "Psycho" at Radio City Music Hall's magnificent theatre. Wow! Hitchcock and Norman Bates, in all their glory. Take good care Butterscotch. :-)
rohanaka
Hiya Miss G... I keep thinking about the backstory on BLOOD ALLEY when I watch it. Originally, Robert Mitchum was playing Wayne's role, and I wonder how it would have been with him and Lauren? Well.. to be honest.. (as much as I love the Duke) I bet Mitchum would have done a good job w/ it. I can definitely see him in that role.. but I think he'd have come off entirely different than the Duke.. a lot more "laid back" maybe. And I imagine that might have made his scenes w/ Lauren work really well (because I did not see as much chemistry between Wayne and Bacall as I thought there could have been) She was just not "firey" enough to believably stand up to his "bigger than life" and bossy nature. ha. She's cooler.. (at least in this movie) and I think THAT would have made a better match w/ Mitchum.. but who am I to say... (I really know next to NOTHING about either her or RM in terms of their real personalities) And then I am constantly on the look out for Anita Ekberg who is credited but I can never recognize or spot her in the movie! Have you? I had to look her up (because I knew her name but could not place her) I THINK she might have been the character who (I THINK) was Big Han's wife (??) maybe.. There was a woman (that COULD have been her in makeup) w/ a baby on her back .. and a BIG gun in her hand.. in a lot of the scenes on the boat... and she stayed out on the deck (with both the baby and the gun) to help fight off any of the other boats, soldiers, etc. That MAY have been her, but I can't say for certain. I also like to compare and contrast Duke and Lauren here in this movie with their later film, The Shootist That is still one movie I have YET to see all the way through.. not sure why (and I really don't think it is because it was his last.. or that he dies) And I have tried to watch it too. but just seem to always give up on it for some reason.. I don't know what it is.. but SOMEDAY I will sit down and watch it.. (someday...)

I agree that this is one of the least satisfying pairings with John Wayne. And I say that feeling that he was one actor who seemed tomake it work no matter who his leading lady was; he always seemed to get along well with the wimmin. But I do think he and Lauren make a more interesting "pair" in The Shootist, even though they aren't really a romantic couple in it. > I had to look her up (because I knew her name but could not place her) I THINK she might have been the character who (I THINK) was Big Han's wife (??) maybe.. Why?????? I wonder if she needed one more American movie credit to get her AFTRA card or something, lol. A movie you might like her in is Back from Eternity, a remake of Five Came Back, about a plane crash in South America and who survives and who doesn't. Robert Ryan is in the remake, too. Very different Anita, the one I'm more familiar with, ha! > That is still one movie I have YET to see all the way through.. not sure why (and I really don't think it is because it was his last.. or that he dies) And I have tried to watch it too. but just seem to always give up on it for some reason.. Frank will be delighted to hear it! I've only seen The Searchers, Giant, Wuthering Heights and In a Lonely Place. Yeah, but that one wasn?t my choice. Heehee! A friend of mine from a big group I?m in is wanting to get into classic movies more and he likes Hitchcock, so I suggested he try going to this, even though I explained how I thought it wasn?t nearly his best piece of work. He really likes Spellbound, but they didn?t play that this summer. He always gets into these long conversations with me about old movies, asking me questions I have never even thought of before! Heehee! I think he does it on purpose, because he likes picking on me and getting into those sarcastic arguments when you get so engrossed in a detailed debate over something silly. Its okay, I pick on him right back. Frankie is never delighted with me. he just likes stealing my strawberry shortcake. Heehee!
