movieman1957
>Yes but I feel bad when I do it to Chris. I like being "bothered" like this by any of you. I am sorry I wasn't any help. The music from the "Picnic At Hanging Rock" is in a different key than Sir Francis' recording. It sounds more Mozart to me but I'm not sure. So glad Sir Francis could help. I'm glad at least one of us is an expert. Going back to study.

butterscotchgreer
Hi ya T. Hiya silly willy! What has been your very favorite movie on the big screen so far? In my whole life? That would be Star Wars Why did I have a feeling you would say that? Heehee! I saw it when it first came out. I was probably thirteen. I couldn't recreate that kind of youthful excitement again if I tried. I don't think anything has compared to that. I still haven?t seen those on the big screen. I saw the new ones only because my grandpa wanted to see them to compare to the old ones. I'm too old to consider that a "classic" film though. That made me laugh! My boyfriend made me watch Rocky the other day because its one of his absolute favorites and he knows I like old movies. I had actually never seen Rocky, because it never striked me as my type of movies, but I really liked it, the love story in it that is. Heehee! Anyway, Joe considers it an ?old? movie, but I just looked at him and said, ?that?s not an old movie, silly. It was made in the 70s for pete?s sake!? and he answered with, ?I wasn?t even around in the 70s!??.I just cracked up and said, ?minor detail?.Casablanca?now that?s an old movie.? Then Joe says back, ?I don?t even know what that is; you?re really silly.??.tsk tsk tsk?. We have the funniest conversations. I saw Red Dust on the big screen many years ago and I was just blown away by seeing Gable and Harlow up there bigger than life for the first time.. It was very exciting. I would love to see King Kong on the big screen. I saw that one two summers ago and I was really excited to see it, but something was wrong with the reel, and it kept cutting off. Im glad you at least got to see it fully on the big screen. I bet it was fun! I know! I'm very slow on the draw. I hope they bring them back. Me too! Never start a newbie, particularly a guy, on Marie Antoinette when dealing with Shearer films. Start with one of the pre-codes. I didn?t even know Sammy watched Marie Antoinette. He watched it with his roommate and the next day asked me about it. I didn?t even know he knew about Norma! Heehee! Poor Norma! You?re telling me! FrankGrimes
Hiya Grey Dude.. (and Miss G too) She's a mess, all right. So.. I made it to the library (without breaking my neck!! ha) and picked up my copy of WOTRW... now I just have to find some time tonight or tomorrow (hopefully) to sit down and watch. There we go! I'm curious to see what you think of it with fresh eyes. Ha.. Oh great... now I have sunk even LOWER (than I likely already am) in the estimation of some on this board (if a certain thread in another forum that will remanin unmentioned is to be believed) But hey.. I can live with that.. and besides... Lately, I am thinking I am being far outmatched by YOU, Mr. Grey, in terms of my love for all things "Duke". ha. I think you MAY have seen almost as many of his films now as I have. You have really impressed me by the way you have been willing to keep an open mind about him.. and I am glad you have found some of his movies among your favorites now. Wayne has impressed me and I've come to this conclusion since I've joined this board. It's true, Wayne lacks range. But that's okay with me because he's a very good actor. I believe he's terribly underrated. He's a relaxing watch; wonderfully easy-going. I've been impressed by his subtlety and his soft side. That's what has won me over. I love his scenes with women. Fantastic. The Duke currently ranks #21 on my favorite actor list and I wouldn't be surprised to see him move up further. You still have me beat when it comes to Wayne viewings. My list is as follows: 1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) .... Tom Doniphon 2. The Searchers (1956) .... Ethan Edwards 3. Stagecoach (1939) .... The Ringo Kid 4. The Quiet Man (1952) .... Sean Thornton 5. The Shepherd of the Hills (1941) .... Young Matt 6. Rio Grande (1950) .... Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke 7. Rio Bravo (1959) .... Sheriff John T. Chance 8. Red River (1948) .... Thomas Dunson 9. Wake of the Red Witch (1948) .... Capt. Ralls 10. Baby Face (1933) .... Jimmy McCoy Jr. 11. The Wings of Eagles (1957) .... Frank W. 'Spig' Wead 12. They Were Expendable (1945) .... Lt. JG 'Rusty' Ryan 13. Fort Apache (1948) .... Capt. Kirby York 14. Angel and the Badman (1947) .... Quirt Evans 15. The Horse Soldiers (1959) .... Col. John Marlowe 16. Hondo (1953) .... Hondo Lane 17. The Long Voyage Home (1940) .... Ole Olsen 18. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) .... Capt. Nathan Cutting Brittles 19. Donovan's Reef (1963) .... Michael Patrick 'Guns' Donovan 20. McLintock! (1963) .... George Washington McLintock Now that's a listing of my favorite films that feature John Wayne. It's not a list of my favorite Wayne characters or performances. "Ralls" would actually rank second in characters, behind "Doniphon." (PS: let me know when you get to Blood Alley.. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it... and say hello to your new girlfriend "Baby" for me too!! ) Girls don't like me! You know this! OH.. and PS: I now (finally) have The Tall T on order.. I kept forgetting to check for that one everytime I went in to the library, but your post reminded me. Well, I did get the box set in the mail, today. I'm going to watch it this weekend. But I can hold off on discussing it. I actually have Hell's Hinges now, too. And also.. after I read some of the other comments between you and Miss G.. guess what else I ordered.. ha.. MissGoddess
Oh, Ro that's great! You have WOTR, The Tall T and Wuthering Heights in the pipeline. Terrific. This should all make for interesting rumbling...I mean rambling! And being an admirer of John Wayne's acting is a mark of exceptional perception. That's why I'm so surprised Grimes likes him. I haven only seen a half dozen or so of his 30s "B" westerns. I've never seen CIRCUS WORLD, either, at the other end of his career, nor do I want to. movieman1957
> I've never seen CIRCUS WORLD, either, at the other end of his career, nor do I want to. A wise choice my dear. I started making lists a long time ago. Long before there were reference books like Leonard Maltin's. I kept lists of what I saw and lists of my favorite actors and directors. If you've seen that many of those old "Lone Star" productions you pretty well have the gist of them.

movieman1957
>That's great. Do you still have them? Yes. Most of those lists are still on old index cards. I started around 1974. I still have a handwritten list of everything I saw. Three columns per side of regular paper. I put an asterisk on them when I saw them again. Sometimes it was tough making sure I didn't already have it on the list. I have since transferred it to a computer as it makes the searching so much easier. movieman1957
Yes, in some things. I used to watch Abbott and Costello every chance I got. I don't really go out of my way to watch them. I am certainly more conscious of noir films now. I am not even sure I knew what I was watching. It was just for entertainment. Now, mostly thanks to you and the group, I watch them more critically. I am less tolerant of bad films. (That may be more an age thing.) I won't watch something too often for the sake of watching something. Some actors I am not as much of a fan as I was once. I am still fond of my westerns and romantic comedies. I have never acquired a taste for horror. I do rely a lot on the group here for new things to watch. When I was younger I didn't know anyone who liked old movies so I would watch something just because it was on. It was about learning, It was forming likes and who I could enjoy and what to avoid. MissGoddess
Sounds like you're still pretty steady. I've changed a lot more, I think, and the board has influenced me a lot, too. I'd say my appreciation with films noir is also one that's grown because of the talk here. And I know what you mean about being more critical. I can see that in myself, too. Though I still like some of my "fluffies". I used to like comedies a lot more than now. Now, for some reason, I prefer television sitcoms (old ones) to comedy films. movieman1957
To see my Netflix queue you may not think I like old movies so much but more so than new films. It is made up mostly of old TV shows, British murder mysteries and some documentaries. These are things I've not seen or find a new series that I like and want to see more of them. This is really true of the British films/series.
