Voting for new DVD releases

I am aware that TCM has no control over this and it's the fault of Warner Home Video but is there anything stupider than Warner running these 'vote for DVD release' promotions? Obviously Warner Home Video should be releasing every one of the films that were voted on plus hundreds of more MGM classic films that it has the rights to. Why is it not releasing these films to DVD right away? I realize that getting the Dukes of Hazzard series out on DVD is a top priority for all lovers of the film art but how about squeezing in some actual classic films?

I don't know why they don't release all of them myself. Maybe they want the votes to make sure the DVDs will sell. Although I don't think the vote is necessary, they will sell...all of them. There are very few current movies that I buy, but I buy the classics all the time and would buy more if they were available in widescreen on DVD.

I think the promotion is just a way to get more people interested in classic films - personally I think it's a good idea and fun at that. Because you have to realize that Warners DOES have plans to release all of the films that are being voted on, but will release the winners of the contest first, and the ones that didn't win will be released at a later date. That's what happened with last years vote - the ones that won came out when the contest said they would, and most of the ones that didn't win have since been released, or have release dates set.

And if you notice - Warner Home Video is the only company that gives us an ABUNDANCE of classic films - no other company releases as many classics as they do, and with the kind of first class quality that Warners gives us. Even Criterion's releases don't look as good as Warners, and they cost twice the price.

Since I'm the one who brought up this topic and the Spencer Tracy topic, let's see which of his MGM films have not been released on DVD. They include:

Bad Day at Black Rock

The Actress

Plymouth Adventure

People Against O'Hara

Malaya

Edward, My Son

State of the Union

Cass Timberlane

Sea of Grass

Without Love

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo

The Seventh Cross

A Guy Named Joe

Keeper of the Flame

Tortilla Flat

Woman of the Year

Men of Boys Town

Boom Town

Edison, the Man

Northwest Passage

I Take This Woman

Boys Town

Test Pilot

Mannequin

Big City

Captains Courageous

They Gave Him a Gun

Libeled Lady

San Francisco

Fury

Riffraff

Whipsaw

The Murder Man

And this a list for just one of MGM's many major stars. I don't think Warner Home Video is doing a good job at all about getting the MGM films on DVD.

To sagebrush522, speaking of his epic performance in "Old Man & the Sea" When I was at the Warner Bros. tour-(Burbank, CA.) I specifically asked for the lil' cart to please go by what is now thee largest Sound Stage left on the planet-(now that M-G-M is mostly gone) Because, after starting that film off the coast of Cuba, a lotta' problems started-(Including Hemingway & *Tracy, getting loaded to the point of destroying a bar/saloon! Plus, *Spence & it's first director: *Fred Zinnemann, didn't agree this time around-(they had worked well on 1944's "Seventh Cross") So he was replaced by J. Sturges. & they literally had to move base-camp all the way back to Hollywood & filmed majority of it in that S. Stage!-(NOTE: as I went by, they were filming: "A Perfct Storm," with: George Clooney) This S. Stage is so massive it can easily be seen from long shots, etc & this always baffled me, but the critics of the day, preferred his per in *Ford's great "Last Hurrah," over "0ld Man?" I thought he was superb in both, but the AMPAS was correct in nominating him for the latter instead-(*Spencer however, ridiculously lost that yr. to *D. Niven in "Separate Tables?") & I've been basically nagging TCM to air these early Fox flix "Quick Millions" (1931) & "A Man's Castle" (1933) It was when it was still just Fox-(20th Century logo started in '35) Although, *Tracy more than hated it there, these are obviously strong roles-(given reviews & clips) Neither are even on Video, let alone DVD as yet-(& it's been that way for years now? Plus, his debut opposite *Bogey in "Up the River" (1930) what is the hold-up?) (TRIVIA: He got out of his despised Fox contract during 1 of his weakest: "Dante's Inferno" A long story, but this movie is on reg. tv quite a bit? Go figure)

Got a trivia item for sagebrush, or anyone? 2 of them actually. When *Tracy went back & 4th on shooting "Bad Day,' in the heat of Lone Pine. How did they kinda' trick him into doing the movie??? & what movie was he canned on & whom replaced him in it. After 21yrs. at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer??? Thank You

To moviegeek, I'll lay you odds, "Double Indemnity" (1944) is way ahead of other 2 you cited. Probably anytime now

I remember when I used to get "PREMIERE" Mag. now I switched to "EW" Anyway, they did conduct some polls & "DI," was crowned #1 greatest Crime-Drama/film 'noir of all-time! They unfortunately, didn't do many of these.

From the late 1980's & early 1990's:

Westerns: "High Noon" (1952)

Horror/Thrillers: "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935)

War-Films: "Apocalypse Now" (1979)

Sci-Fi: "2001" (1968)/"Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951)

Musicals-(I cannot recall if "Wizard of 0z" or "Singin In the Rain," won it's survey? 1 of the two.)

It was a superb magazine, once!?

Hi:

Regarding the Old Man and the Sea performance versus the Last Hurrah performance, I think the latter was better and was the more deserving of the Oscar nomination. I think Tracy should have won for one or the other that year but we all know how the Oscars are; fickle in the extreme.

Regarding Tracy's Fox films and the Fox company, in general, it seems to me that they (Fox) are dropping the ball in a major way. Not only aren't they releasing the pre-1936 films on DVD but I see no effort on their part to even restore those films. I assume most of them, including films by Tracy, Will Rogers, the Charlie Chan films, and others, are silmply rotting away somewhere without Fox doing anything. I rag on Warner Video but Fox is much much much worse in this regard.

I don't believe TCM has any rights to show the pre-1936 Fox films. Someone correct me if I'm wrong..
