cinemafan
After having the blessed time to go on a movie watching spree at TCM this week, and researching photos, it dawned on me how many print advertisements there are featuring stars of yesteryear. Here's a place we can feature them. Be aware that many are for cigarettes and alcoholic drinks, and others for cosmetics and you name it. But all are interesting and fun to see. I'll start with this one.
MissGoddess
What a marvelous idea for a thread, cinemafan! That ad you posted is going to upset Lady Bronxie's equilibrium. Not only does it have Cornel Wilde, it features a castle in Scotland! I'll rummage around my pictures and see what I can come up with; this should be fun!
cinemafan
Miss G - I had that photo for a while and finally found a home for it. Now where can I get some of that cologne? *Marion Davies* *Pier Angeli*
MissGoddess
One of the most memorable series of advertisements was for the Blackglama furs: *Joan Crawford* *Marlene Dietrich* *Bette Davis* *Barbara Stanwyck* (Missy looks upset) *Lena Horn* *Sophia Loren* *Audrey Hepburn* *Claudette Colbert* *Elizabeth Taylor* *Catherine Deneuve*
JackFavell
Awesome idea, CF! I have been noticing how many stars did print ads as well.

JackFavell
I loved those Blackglama fur ads, I used to wait to see who was going to be in them! Also:
MissGoddess
That's a great shot of Lauren! I forgot she did those milk advertisements. Here's a lady with that "indefinable charm"...
MissGoddess
A lovely ad featuring *Virginia Bruce* What I love about the older ads is the hand illustrations vs. mere photographs.

cinemafan
Miss G - that was a bonus - it also had Dolores Del Rio, Brenda Joyce, Merle Oberon and Myrna Loy. Color controlled powder! I love it. Here's one that gets right to the point -
MissGoddess
Hahaha!! Dick and his "tomatoes"! one more with Frank...
cinemafan
That one with Robert Taylor/smokes is terribly bittersweet. These are like pieces of history. *Lana with darker hair -*
HollywoodGolightly
Beautiful Rita tells us what soap she likes best...
JackFavell
Oh I've seen a bunch of stars doing those Woodbury ads! Also Max Factor.... of course.
MissGoddess
Oh my goodness, cinemafan! Lana looks just like Joan Crawford in that picture! Ha! Jackie---Max Factor's "pan cake" was my first make-up when I was a teen! And it wasn't because of the movies, believe it or not, I didn't find out the stars used it until later...it was because another classmate I knew used it and had the smoothest looking complexion of any girl in school. Love those adds!
JackFavell
Oh, isn't it funny how most of those older makeup products were still around when we were teens? I miss how simple everything used to be... You reminded me of an ad I saw when I was a teenager...my first experience with vintage ads that had stars in them. I am going to have to go look for it. primosprimos
I miss how simple everything used to be... Hah. You and me both. Isn't it wonderful to see them shilling products that would eventually kill them? Desi and Lucy both shilled cigarettes, as did Bogey. Didn't Liz Taylor become an animal activist? I bet she'd wouldn't like to see that photo of her in a mink coat. I can only remember print ads with a very young Tom Selleck in them. Thanks for the great walk down memory lane everyone. cinemafan
primos - I am glad that you are enjoying this thread. It combines my love of history and the movie world. We can't change history, and if we could go back and do things over......well, that's another world. A word to the wise for those who do social networking. Watch out what you put out there in print and photos. Especially these days - they are saved somewhere and saved forever. This is from my original post, realizing that ads for these products are limited nowadays - *Be aware that many are for cigarettes and alcoholic drinks, and others for cosmetics and you name it. But all are interesting and fun to see.* cinemafan
wouldbestar
Thank you, everybody! I just loved these and remember many. I'd forgotten Woodbury soap. When I became an actress, the first thing I was going to do was buy a jar of Lustre-Creme and shampoo my hair like crazy. According to my mother it was two expensive for us but I suspect she was trying to discourage my sordid-to her, anyway- ambition. Rhonda Fleming and Yvonne de Carlo's adds were the ones I remember the most. My dad was a Chesterfield man. He almost went to work for them in the early fifties which means I would have grown up in North Carolina with all that Barbecue. Can I say ?Damn!? on this and not get dinged? So Max Factor was matching hair and lipstick colors back in the 40?s and 50?s; I bought the idea from Arlene Dahl?s book in 1965. The colors look pretty and just $1.00! Things were different back then. I?ll have to look for Cass Timberlane if Lana Turner?s a redhead in it. It?s how I like her best. Thanks again folks for the pick-me-up.
