What Are You Watching Now?

There is a lot to like about Bringing Up Baby but I do find the Hepburn character to be annoying.   Yea,  she was suppose to be annoying to the Grant character but often in films with an annoying character the character either 'lightens up' or in the case of Shelley Winters, gets bumped off (ha ha),  but that doesn't happen here.   So to me Hawks pushes the concept a little to far.

I'm fine with the frantic pacing which is very common in many Hawks comedies.

Thus for repeat viewing I'm a bigger fan of Holiday and The Philadelphia Story.

I don't find Hepburn annoying in this film, in fact, I find her utterly charming.  I love this movie.

My favorites of her films are The Philadelphia Story (though I dislike Virginia Weidler.  I find her annoying) and Stage Door

A few people would probably take exception with your comment about Ginny. I think she has a lot of fans. Maybe it's the character of Dinah in TPS that you actually find annoying. I'd recommend checking out some of the other performances she did in movies.

Halls of Montezuma (1951) - Starz Encore On Demand

w/ Richard Widmark, Jack Palance, Robert Wagner, Karl Malden, Bert Freed, Jack Webb, Richard Boone, Neville Brand and Martin Milner. And directed by Lewis Milestone.

Watching Warlock (1959) yesterday put me in the mood for more Richard Widmark today.

I don't think I've ever seen HALLS OF MONTEZUMA. Good director and cast. I'm glad you've mentioned it.

If you have access to Starz Encore On Demand, you have until the end of October to catch it.

It is worth seeing. However it is one of those movies which you watch for the characters (including a rarely seen kinder gentler Jack Palance) rather than for the plot. Which I find to be a common trait amongst the better movies of this genre.

Speaking of rarely seen, this movie includes drug use by a member of the U.S. military. A bit of a surprise for a movie set in World War II and made in 1951.

Thanks for the background on the film. Sounds very interesting. I think I can stream Starz thru Amazon Prime. I will look into it. I'm sure they have other films I haven't seen.

I love Hepburn's gold lame (I'm picturing it as gold lame) dress in the scene at in the hotel lobby.  I love her almost sheer veil that makes it look like ribbons are protruding from her head.

The ribbons protruding from her head are a lot better than her golden bug costume from 1933's Christopher Strong.

Lol! I don't even know what is going on in this movie, but I definitely need to see it.  I need to know why she's wearing this outfit.

I think I saw some of your comments on the Days page over at IMDb. One of my sisters called me to ask if the show was getting cancelled, so I was reading up on the situation.

Thanks. There was a lot of speculation it was on the chopping block, but they just announced a new headwriter whose material will start airing in August (they're six months ahead). So I would assume that means NBC decided to renew it for another year providing there was a change in the writing. The ratings are quite low.

Spent the afternoon avoiding meaningful activity and watching two of the worst films ever...Teenagers from Outer Space (59) and Teenage Zombies (59).  As awful as it was, I preferred the first--hokey, badly acted, terrible 'special' effects (the monster is a shadow of a lobster).. so bad you have to keep watching.  There's a 'Luke, I am your father' moment when the evil head of the no-name planet tells one of the teens he's his dad..and the heroine wears a white dress throughout the film--explores caves, actually rolls down a dirt hill--and remains spotless--incredible.  The second film had some interesting fashion too--an evil female scientist (who looks very much like a cross between Ann Miller and Vampira) wears black cocktail dresses and sequined evening gowns under her lab coat.  She is doing experiments on a deserted island (she says no one ever leaves, or visits, and yet she has an fridge full of pepsi for some teens who arrive unexpectedly..nice) No one except other teens seem alarmed that the kids have disappeared..have they no parents?  not even the sherriff (spoiler!).  The evil woman has created a gas that turns people into zombies who will believe anything she says, no matter how ridiculous, and she wants to take over the country using it (yeah, I was thinking the same thing..) Since this was a double feature on the Drive-in app, there was an intermission which was as entertaining as the film.  Not just the usual dancing popcorn boxes, there were a series of local ads (late 50s, early 60s) from merchants of a town in Kentucky--everything from $3 oil change to wig shops to furniture stores (complete living room for under $200), lots of hardware stores, the bank, the Rexall drug store, and several cafes.  The strawberry pie actually looked pretty good.  Yes, these were 'bad' movies, but I was watching them nearly 60 years later...and I couldn't recall the names of the 'good' film Oscar nominees for the last three years.  Wonder if anyone will be watching them in 60 years...makes you think...

I'm watching (what else?) The Mary Tyler Moore Show.  I literally just replaced seasons 1-4 last week (my original copies were damaged in my basement flood) and season 7 wasn't in the basement at the time.  Seasons 5 & 6 are enroute.  I think watching the entire series is in order.

RIP Mary :(

Now I'm watching The Dick Van Dyke Show.  I just ordered the series on blu-ray (they had a great price) but it hasn't come yet.  I'm watching the show on Hulu.  It's the episode where Laura gets her toe stuck in the faucet.

This is such a fun show.  Except for Ritchie.  He's probably the worst child actor ever.  He bugs me because he's what? 10? But he acts like he's like 4.  And he's ALWAYS YELLING HIS LINES!
