George Sanders's performane in "The Black Swan"

Recommended Posts

I'm currently watching Sanders's performance in "The Black Swan" on TCM.

Is it just me, or is this one of the hammiest, cartoonish, rare bad performances by the usually understated and skilled Sanders? Or is he having on one," because he disliked the quality of the writing or other elements. Or is it a case of bad directing?

I agree George Sanders is quite annoying in this, but probably more so for the ridiculous red beard and wig. I really enjoy Laird Cregar, in a sublimely over the top performance.

The hamminess of the acting is what makes this film so great (oh, and the Technicolor). Someone once told me they find all of Power's swashbuckling performances to be hammy - I don't know if I agree with this. George Sanders definitely was in rare form but nothing like his role as "Shadwell" in *Psychomania*....I too would have probably taken my life shortly after the filming.
