I forgot to check back at this site, and I can't make that Email arrangement work since I switched carriers. But here goes.

 

Labor strife on the docks. Crooked union officials. A murder. Late 50s issue.

The victim did not die immediately. He named his killers to his wife, but did not rat them out to the cops. There is a cultural thing about handling things internally, even leaving that task to his allies. -- but don't talk to outsiders about insiders' business.

The straight-arrow prosecuter is an outsider to this waterfront culture, and must rely on the savy work of a better-informed cop. The officer is more knowledgable, but he, too, is an outsider. The cop is played by one of the stalwart film-noir names.

Correct, Lavender. There was some effort, it seems, drum up the same enthusiasm generated by *On the Waterfront* some three years earlier. Good story in itself, just didn't draw the same audiences.
