flashback42
The disgraced doctor quoted earlier handles medical needs for a gang of criminals. He often verbally noodles an altered version of the British drinking song that is performed by a chorus of impressive names playing RAF pilots in the film The Dawn Patrol (1938). The doctor relates the song to a cholera epidemic in India in the 19th century.

flashback42
Well, then. 1941's The Get-Away (sometimes listed as The Getaway) has Robert Sterling as the undercover Fed who arranged a prison break to make his way into a gang. Dan Daily was the gang leader he was after. Charles Winninger was the besotted MD / comedy relief who handled emergency first aid for the gang. This film was aired a couple of weeks back on TMC. I had first seen it some time in the fifties; one of the things I remembered was that it was in that film that I first heard that "Next Man That Dies" song. Open thread. mr6666
thanks lavender - despite the successful, eye-pleasing outcome of a challenging shoot, the film was a box office failure that led to Transatlantic's demise, and the director's pleasure at snagging "the biggest star of the day" was quickly overshadowed by the actress' scandalous affair with a foreign director. -film?
