Producer Hal Roach saw that Fox had hits with a couple of Shirley Temple Civil War movies, "The Little Colonel" and "The Littlest Rebel". He thought he could duplicate their success, but "General Spanky" was not very funny and Roach decided to staye with the shorts format for the gang. Before the robbers can find the money, he puts it into a shoebox belonging to a young boy. However, the young boy is taken hostage, but the crooks don't know that the boy has the money. He claimed it was because of poor investments; she stated he had bought a horse that was’t winning. His attorney would come by soon to give her the check, so that his client would be released.
