This movie is based on a novel written by an American author. _New Clues_ A pivotal scene near the middle of the picture takes place on a train where a man pleads for the love of a woman. She can stay with him or she can get off the train, leaving him bereft. She stays with him and the story goes on. The woman eventually makes it on the stage but things don't go quite so well for the guy.
laffite
Help. It's been five days and several clues later and not even a single guess or request for a clue. Most of you are smart enough to know this, it would seem to me. Are these bad clues? This movie is underrated in my view but not that underrated. There are a couple other threads here where I have responded with no responses, one which is very popular. I don't want to worry about being ignored and getting into all that ego-based self indulgent nobody-likes-me boo-hoo blah blah stuff and it would make me feel better if someone would take a stab at this or ask for another clue. It's an early 1950s movie. Please review the clues above. If these clues are not specific enough or if I'm not doing this right, please advise. davezarn
Laffite,,, NEVER feel like you are being ignored! I spent almost 2 hours researching the clues and, just whwn I thought I was getting close, one clue wouldn't fit. Darn! It's cool! About Clues ."Please sir, can I have some more?" Just one maybe.. :0) Z
laffite
Thank you for your kind response, Dave. The lead actress is the _title character_. She also has another film in which she plays a title character. Both of these roles are based on well-known literary novels. The novels have the same title as the movies. Name just the one movie that corresponds to clues already given.
davezarn
Just a thought.... Maybe it would help if you gave the "decade" that the movie was made? That may narrow it down a bit... Just my $00.02.... DaveZ
laffite
I mentioned earlier and in passing that it is early 50s.. Clues so far A woman leaves a small town to live in a big city. A happy-go-lucky kind of guy has a strong role in this film. Another strong role in this film is a restaurateur who is embroiled in an unhappy marriage. The restaurateur is played by a famous actor who has a considerable reputation for success on the stage. This movie is based on a novel written by an American author. She stays with him and the story goes on. The woman eventually makes it on the stage but things don't go quite so well for the guy. New clue Thirteen years before this movie was made, the leading man played in a movie that was also adapted from a world famous novel. The movie used the same title as the novel. His leading lady in _that_ movie was Merle Oberon.

lavenderblue19
Thanks and Sorry it took so long, embarassed to say it's one of the films I've always wanted to see and never did and didn't read Dreiser's novel . Thought of Jennifer immediately, but was confused since she had done (including Carrie) 4 movies with the character name in the title (figures Carrie was the only one I haven't seen)
