Kid Dabb
Not Five Fingers This is one film in a long and very popular franchise. The star has only appeared in this one film of that franchise. His character marries and his new bride is slain.

DownGoesFrazier
He's around.. A film starring an actress who was in both versions of a movie about two female owners of a girls' school was a landmark film in Hollywood history. What was the film? flashback42
The Children's Hour (1961) made references to a lesbian relationship -- unusual for that time. It was a remake of These Three (1936), which slanted on a one man -- two women setup. Lillian Hellman was the author of the stage play. Miriam Hopkins was in both versions of the film. ??? That wasn't the question. The first clue was just to get you to Miriam Hopkins. Once you know it's Hopkins, there is an additional step.
flashback42
Ooohh! I thought Children's Hour was the landmark film in reference. Would it be The Story of Temple Drake (1933), which had censorship problems re rape and violence?

starliteyes
During WWII, a small town newspaper reporter is convinced that an actress/singer who he admires is a spy. She, in turn, thinks that he is a spy.
starliteyes
When the film begins, the reporter is in a movie theater watching one of the actress/singer's movies. The film clip that is used in this scene is actually from one of her movies made 5 years earlier.
starliteyes
The role of the actress/singer's maid is played by another singer with a contrasting singing style.
starliteyes
This one seems to be dying on the vine, so I'll just reveal the answer. It was Cairo, starring Jeanette MacDonald and Robert Young with Ethel Waters in the supporting role of the maid. Thread's open.
