Need the name of movie with old man and dog

There was an old man who had a small dog who did tricks. There is a little rich girl who saw the dog doing tricks for the old man in the park and wants that dog. The old man will not part with the dog. Eventually, the little girl ends up with the dog after the old man dies. The dog, though, because he is heartbroken will not do tricks for the little girl. Eventually, the dog dies and goes up a staircase to Heaven and the old man is standing there waiting for him.

My wife said it was a real tear-jerker. I think its a movie, in b/w, but may have been a made for tv show back in the 50's or 60's.

Don't know the name of your movie, but there is a 1952 b/w Italian film "Umberto D" that also features an old man, a dog, and a young girl, and it's quite moving too.
