Wow, that's a mighty tall order. But I'll give it a shot. I am just listing my top 20 as they come into my mind, these are not in any specific order of preference. Note: I am distinguishing a horror movie from a sci-fi monster movie. I have not included "The Thing", or "Them!" or movies about alien invasions. I am also not including movies about psycho killers or such like either, because I consider them to fall under the category of a thriller or a suspense movie. I am only including horror movies about ghosts or other supernatural entities.

Here goes.....

1. The Cat People

2. The Changeling (The 1980 George C Scott version)

3. The Fog (Again, the 1980 version)

4. The Uninvited (1944) -- this is my personal favorite of them all

5. Dracula (The Bela Lugosi version)

6. Nosferatu (The silent 1922 version)

7. The Mummy (The original with Boris Karloff)

8. The Mummy (The Hammer films version with Christopher Lee as the mummy and Peter Cushing)

9. Frankenstein (Karloff version)

10. Bride of Frankenstein

11. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (one of Hammer's later films)

12. The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas

13. Dracula, Prince of Darkness (Hammer)

14. The Wolf Man (1941 Lon Chaney Jr. version)

15. The Old Dark House

16. Isle of the Dead

17. Black Sabbath (1963)

18. Black Sunday

19. Dead of Night

20. Castle of Blood

This is strictly of the cuff. I will, undoubtedly, forget some.

ISLE OF LOST SOULS

THE INVISIBLE MAN

FRANKENSTEIN

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

THE WOLFMAN

THEM

JAWS

THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS

IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA

KING KONG

I just watched ROSEMARY'S BABY for the first time in decades. Boy, is that scary! Exceptionally well written.

I agree that suspense and horror are different things. I included JAWS on a whim. Whatever it is, it's scary!

Here my top favorites.

1. The Uninvited (1944) my all time favorite

2. The Beast with Five Fingers - Peter Lorre (after watching this one I was scared of Peter Lorre for

ages)

3. The Fog (Jamie Lee Curtis)

4. Dracula (The Bela Lugosi version)

5. The Mummy (The original with Boris Karloff)

6. Frankenstein (Karloff version)

7. Dracula, Prince of Darkness (Hammer)

8. The Wolf Man (1941 Lon Chaney Jr. version)

9. The Haunting (both versions)

10.The Spiral Staircase

11.The Fly

12 Jaws

13. Night of the Living Dead

14. Invasion of the Saucer Men (cheesy but still fun. cow neighs like a horse makes it so funny and priceless.)

15. House on Haunted Hill (Vincent Price)

16. Them

17. The Tingler (dumb brother scared me hard to death after this one.)

18. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte

19. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

The older movies did not rely on the gore to make the movies scary. It was the suspense, black and white were grand with the shadows. They allowed the viewers imagination just run wild. They took you only so far then you own mind did the rest. My son thought these movies were stupid until he began watching them with me. Now at 32, he loves them for the suspense. This was also when actors/actresses had to act. They maybe cheesy by today's standards but they will survive the test of time.

It's funny that I forgot to include the great Val Lewton films on my list. I guess my subconscious doesn't categorize them as horror. So. we're back to suspense vs. horror. But they sure are spooky!

Even though this is an older thread I reckon I can come up with my 'TOP 20' Horror favorites of all time:

EVILSPEAK (1981)

POSSESSION OF VIRGINIA, The (1972-Canadian)  [aka:  "Le Diable est Parmi Nous"]

BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, The (1970-UK)

SHADOW OF ILLUSION (1970-IT)  Weird and fun!

BEAST WITHIN, The (1982)  Loads of gore, creepy music and cicadas!  DIG IT

DARK ECHOES (1982)  So weird it defies description.

MORTUARY (1983)

FRIDAY THE 13th (1980)

FRIDAY THE 13th, Part 3 (1982)

FOG, The (1980)

THING, The (1982)

HOWLING, The (1980)

AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, An (1981)

PIRANHA (1978)

WITCHMAKER, The (1969)

ENTER THE DEVIL (1972)

EVIL DEAD, The (1983)

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, The (1974)

I do like 'JAWS' a lot, but I don't consider it a horror movie whereas 'PIRANHA' has hungry little fishies gleefully munching flesh!

Horror is probably my absolute least favorite genre.  I'm more interested in the psychological films or the really cheesy slasher ones.  I don't like the gory ones.  If there is blood and gore, then it needs to be over the top so that it's obviously fake.

Anyway here goes on the ones I've seen and enjoyed.  These are listed in no particular ranking.

1. King Kong (1933)

2. Psycho (1960)

3. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

4. The Birds (1963)

5. Carrie (1976)

6. Young Frankenstein (1974) (Is this considered a horror movie?)

7. Halloween (1978)

8. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

9. Friday the 13th (1980)

10. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

11. What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)

12. The Fly (1986)

13. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

14. Donnie Darko (2004)

15. Gremlins (1984)

16. The Thing (1982)

17. Scream (1996)

18. Jaws (1975)

19. Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)

In no particular order:

1.  The Wicker Man (1973)--102 minute version.

I like the fact you put this film first. I think the 70s were the best decade for horror films..the end of the production code opened up many story avenues for this genre, and THE WICKER MAN shows where it can go.

I'm really looking forward to The Witch. I've read a lot of positive things.

I hadn't heard of The Nightmare.

I second the recommendations for Inside, The House of the Devil, The Babadook. V/H/S was fun, too.
