therealfuster
will it be the snide George Sanders or the sinister Tom Conway? Well, TCM has a whole six hours of The Falcon today...and it made me think about which Sanders frere, that I like more. Natch, George is the front runner, being the A-film actor, the glamorous one who married not one, but two Gabor sisters...but in my heart of hearts, I may have to pick Tom [sanders] Conway. Though Georgie-Porgie did win the AA for his acid-tongued portrayal of Eve Harrington's equal in "All About Eve" and many other infamous roles, who but slithering Tom Conway could play the role of Dr. Lewis Judd in two classics, "Cat People" and "The Seventh Victim" and also play an animated dummy for Hitchcock on television, who still could charm the ladies. Yes, I'm going with Conway. Who do you choose as your favorite brother in Falconry?
path40a
Not sure, based upon your post, whether you're asking us to pick our favorite between the two actors who played the Falcon IN THE ROLE, or just in general. In general, I would pick George Sanders though this may be because I have seen so few of Tom Conway's films. OTOH, I think even if you've only seen a few of George Sanders' films, you'll walk away amused, impressed, or otherwise affected by his performance. His cynical intellectual is infectious, IMO. If you are instead asking which actor you liked best IN THE ROLE of the Falcon, I know I'd like to see the two other George Sanders films (not shown today) "The Gay Falcon" and "The Falcon Takes Over" before committing to either. Glad I got to see "A Date with the Falcon" and "The Falcon's Brother" (the transition film, with Tom Conway) today. I didn't know, before watching that film, that Conway and Sanders were brothers. But it's pretty obvious when you see it. I then watched "The Falcon Strikes Back" which was pretty weak. But, before I decide, I'll watch the others I taped today first. spadeneal
I'm going to assume that the question means "Best in the role of the Falcon." For me it's definitely Conway. I love George Sanders in general; his voice intoning his world weary lines from "The Picture of Dorian Grey" (1945) often run thorugh my head even though it's been years since I've seen the movie. But the Falcon pictures have a light comedy element, in which Sanders is good, but Conway is better. BTW, thanks again TCM for running this mini-festival of the Falcon. In my hometown local station WBTI had the package and would run two or three Falcon movies at a time every couple of months or so. The prints on TCM were great compared to the CCC prints shown on WBTI. For the first time I was able to appreciate how well shot and edited "The Falcon's Brother" is in addition to the fine acting and script. And by the way, my wife, whose taste usually runs to the "Lethal Weapon" types of moveis, actually called me at work to tell me how much she was enjoying the Falcon movies -- "They're cute!" That NEVER happens, folks.... Dave Lewis
deeanddaisy666
I was going to say I like both, but I have to go with Conway as well. Sanders is very, very polished and delightful in his own way. I can't say I remember the progression from Saint to Falcon, but he WAS very much THE Saint while Conway made the Falcon HIS role. I love the way he stepped up to the characterization without missing a beat and with no degradation in enjoyment, at least imo. Dave, these are the movies that I enjoy the most, the 'B' movies that don't have any pretensions, but gave their all, nonetheless. I just saw a little gem, 'Mystery in Mexico', and I can't even remember who was in it, but it was a delight from beginning to end. I bet at the time this wasn't even a 'B' movie, was there such a thing as a 'C' category?? I love the Chan, Falcon/Saint, Moto, and Holmes series, as much as I do the 'A' movies. Thank you, TCM. bansi4
Tom Conway all the way. Although both brothers are talented actors I believe Conway had more zip as the role of The Falcon. It fit him like a glove. And thanks goes to his brother George for extending the role to him when he left the role. Mongo
therealfuster
I was really just speaking tongue in cheek, as how can one really like one Sanders brother over the other? They're both marvelous! I just gave the nod to Tom, since George gets a lot more attention usually as his films were more big budget and mainstream. I must say though, I can never forget Tom as Max Collodi, in that Alfred Hitchcock Presents tv episode "The Glass Eye" with Shatner and Jessica Tandy. Very bloodcurdling.... I sure would have liked to have met the father of the Sanders boys, and seen if that is where they got their savoir faire.
leobertucelli
Both are so good, in anything. Conway in 'The Cat' or was it the black cat? But actually Saunders just may have had more opportunities or picked the right roles resulting in an academy award for 'All About Eve' I especially liked him in 'Death of A Scoundral' which Conway also was in plaaying his brother.
