Autographs and Regrets

In correspondence with the "Autographs" thread...

Is there anyone in particular you wish you would've written to, and now you're kicking yourself because they have now passed away, you didn't become a fan until later, or they are in just too ill of health to write anymore?

I would've loved to correspond with actress Marion Mack, who played Annabelle Lee in the old silent The General. From what I hear, she was generous with General fans up to the end. She died in '89 when I was a young kid.

The one I regret not writing to was Ava Gardner who by that time was living in Europe. I heard she did sign autographs by mail Also, there are several I did write to in the early 90s and then shortly after they passed away, such as my all time favorites Greer Garson, Irene Dunne and Eve Arden. I could kick myself for waiting just a bit too long.

  • 5 weeks later...

I came to loving the old movies when I was in my 20s - so that was the 1990s and most of my favorites were dead by then.

I would LOVE to have gotten Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Claude Rains, Cary Grant - but my most cherished autographs would have been ...

Alfred Hitchcock and Charlie Chaplin because it just doesn't get ANY better than those two gents.

Cheers!

I'd like to have written to Gloria Grahame.

Oh, HarlowKeatonGirl, you may enjoy this...a great uncle of mine dated Jean while he was in college. His family has a letter that she wrote him thanking him for the nice time.

He said that her mother did not want her dating him, since even then she was grooming Jean for stardom and was very protective of her. Funny isn't it?

This probably will not mean anything to some of the posters, but i'd like to go back in time and visit the folks at Republic studios. To meet and talk with David Sharpe,Tom Steele[two of their ace stuntmen],director William Witney, the Lydecker brothers[special effects wizards],the various musicians ,actors. In short practically everyone who provided me with many hours of entertainment when I was growing up .
