spadeneal
Did anyone here have any thoughts on "Gertrud" ? Contemporary critical appraisals are generally very favorable, but later ones are less so. I enjoyed it a great deal more than I thought I would, based on what I'd read about it. My feeling is that it is like a very carefully filmed play. Dreyer's goal may have been "realism," but what he has here resembles a kind of surrealism, or at least an extended dreamlike state, as we don't perceive cinematic time in this way. Dreyer did not have the kind of absolute control over his long takes as Hitchcock did. There is a tiny blip during Gertrud's conversation with the poet, indicating he needed to edit two of his long takes together. It just points up how difficult it is to make this kind of movie to absolute perfection. My wife didn't enjoy it as I did: she said it was "unbelievably boring and slow."
