Somewhat Off-Topic: What have you been reading lately?

Recommended Posts

This is interesting: it seems the majority of people who watch TCM - or at least the people who responded to this thread - read mostly biographies and other non-fiction ( as opposed to fiction), the exception being the P.G. Wodehouse fans. I'd have thought that those who like fiction movies would also like fiction in literature. Generalization, I guess.

So, I gather not many folks use an "e-reader" or whatever you want to call it? The hand-held digital device that holds thousands of books, apparently, and you can access it whenever you want. It's not for me, but a lot of people like those things. Personally, I am quite happy with the "old school" version of books and have no intention of ever using an "e-reader" if I can help it.

Definitely interesting, misswonderly. It made me realize that while I love to escape into the fiction of old movies, I don't like to do the same with books. P.G. Wodehouse for me is the rare exception when it comes to fiction I like (and The Razor's Edge because it's so well-written, but I believe this story was based on actual events, though I could be wrong). Most of the books on my shelves are biographies and non-fiction works.

With e-Readers, since I stare at a computer all day, I like to give my eyes a rest at night and look at something printed.

Right now I'm in the midst of reading *Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel*, the "lost" Marx Brothers radio program scripts from 1932. It's a repeat read, actually. It's funny (naturally)... they borrowed a lot of material for or from their movies. Groucho is Flywheel, a lawyer, and Chico is Ravelli, his assistant. Harpo wasn't a good fit for radio, so he didn't appear. Audiences didn't hear him honking his horn.

Hey, I "resurrected" this thread again. I mean, what else can we do in the middle of such a cold snowy intense winter but watch movies and read? (Don't answer that.)

So... I am reading Jonathan Franzen's novel Freedom. (He's the guy who wrote "The Corrections", just in case anyone's interested.)

It's very good so far. I like this writer -( loved "The Corrections".) His writing style is funny and smart, with well-developed characters and thoughtful things to say.

And might as well say what my husband's reading, as it pertains in a way to the Beatles thread here: Yup, he's reading that book I mentioned on the thread, "Tune In".

Anyone else catching up on thar book-larnin' this winter?

Well, in the last couple of months, I've been ploughing through a number of show business biographies - Claude Rains, Alan Ladd, Errol Flynn, Raoul Walsh and now just starting Gene Fowler's Goodnight, Sweet Prince, about John Barrymore (I'm really going to need a dictionary at times with the vocabulary to be found in this baby!)

I just finished reading a piece of famous fiction, though, B. Traven's Treasure of the Sierra Madre, comparing it, of course, to the screen adaption, which is one of my ten favourite films. At times the dialogue that I read seemed to be right out of the film (oops, I guess that's the other way around, isn't it?). John Huston was smart enough to put Traven dialogue into his film characters' mouths, perhaps not exactly all the time, of course, but pretty close, much of the time.

Just to see how Traven's dialogue influenced one of the most famous lines of dialogue ever heard in a film, do you recall that great moment in the film in which Gold Hat Bandit Alfonso Bedoya tries to initially pass himself off as a member of "the mounted police" to a rifle-wielding Bogie taking cover behind a rock. The film's most famous line occurs with Bedoya's outburst when Bogart demands to see his badge.

"Badges?" Bedoya says, "We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any STINKIN' badges!"

In the novel, at this same moment, Traven's dialogue for the bandit is as follows:

"Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. In fact, we don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned **** and ching tu madre!"

Well, there's a little more Mexican flavoured invective to Traven's version, of course, but it's essentially the same dialogue. And that's the way it was with much of the film version.

Walter Huston IS B. Traven's old man Howard. One scene, though, with dialogue largely the same from the novel had an extra touch of Huston's. It's the moment in which Howard first comes across gold and joyously tells his two rookie gold prospecting partners how dumb they are for not knowing the riches they were treading on.

That little eccentric dance that Howard simultaneously does was not in the novel. That is purely the invention of Walter Huston, for one of the film's most memorable moments.

I'm plowing through the new Barbara Stanwyck bio Steel True. Not an easy read due to her constant digressions into the background of every person who enters Barbara's orbit. It is worth reading and interesting, just wish it had been better edited............(and this is only Vol. 1!!!)

My latest read is a terrific compendium by George Anastasia and Glen Macnow called *The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies* (2011), which ranks and gives long writeups of 100 of the best of the genre from all over the world, from Little Caesar and The Public Enemy up through the 21st century. Great book to read and argue with, though actually their rankings are fairly defensible for the most part.

John Huston tends to stick very close to the text in his movies. For instance, The Maltese Falcon keeps the dialogue intact almost line for line.

If you read Gene Fowler's bio of Barrymore, I wonder if you caught Christopher Plummer's portrayal of him on PBS. It was quite wonderful, comic and tragic at the same time.

Yes, rosebette, I did see Christopher Plummer's magnificent performance in the film version of Barrymore. As I watched it, I wished that Barrymore might have been able to see this portrayal.

Plummer was like the actor he so loved and admired, alternately grand and theatrical, comic and witty and, at times, terribly, terribly vulnerable. That moment towards the end of the film in which Plummer lies on the floor leaning against a chair, his face tear stained, suddenly saying to himself, "Oh God, I've **** it all away" ripped me apart.

In that scene Plummer was showing the actor experiencing painful self awareness. Facing the fact that he had allowed his great natural gifts to be gradually thrown away through years of self destructive behaviour, he was, at that moment, a man lost and frightened, staring into the abyss that was before him.

And a few minutes later Plummer as Barrymore would once again be laughing and singing, playing the grand man of the theatre, ready to make those around him laugh at his antics, all really a ruse to cover his pain.

Plummer gave a performance that could stand next to the best of Barrymore, in my opinion.

Orson Welles, who came to know Barrymore in his final years, said that the actor was acutely aware of the fact that he was making a public spectacle of himself and that his family and friends were hurt and ashamed to see the way he was carrying on. Welles said that by Barrymore pretending that it was all a drunken lark, often playing the buffoon, acting as if he didn't give a damn, he was, in fact, giving the last great performance of his life.

I'm abotu 1/3 of the way thru _A Life of Barbara Stanwyck: Steel True 1907-1940_ by Victoria Wilson. It's an interesting read--Stanwyck had a very rough childhood and was more or less supporting herself as a showgirl and dancer by the age of 14 or so. The author provides a lot of "local color" by discussing what was going on at each stage--for example, during her showgirl years, Wilson talks about who was starring on Broadway, who was passing through on their way up or down or to Hollywood--the actors and personalities who populated Stanwick's world. Fascinating.

Hey, tracey, you and Hibi both !

What's funny is, at first I sort of glanced at Hibi's post before I actually read it, and initially all I saw was "Steel".

I thought she was reading something by Danielle Steele ! (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

(But then of course I actually read her post and saw that like you, she's reading that biography of Barbara Stanwyck. Wonder if Eugenia is too, she's a huge Babs fan.)

I am reading Dashiell Hammett's "The Thin Man." I am almost done (about 30 pages to go), then I am going to re-watch "The Thin Man" movie to see how close the book and film match up. I have already noticed some differences between the two just by reading the book.

Prior to that, I read Errol Flynn's autobiography "My Wicked, Wicked Ways." Excellent read. I was actually dreading finishing the book and at one point, I was down to the last 11 pages, which I could have easily finished before going to bed; but I didn't want it to end, so I was purposely stretching it out by only reading a couple pages at a time. Though, finally, after having renewed the book at the library three times, I decided it was time to finish it and return it. I plan on getting my own copy in the near future.

After finishing "The Thin Man," I am going to borrow Buster Wiles' "My Days With Errol Flynn" (I found out my library has it) and also borrow Oscar Wilde's "The Portrait of Dorian Gray." I have a profile with the social network "Goodreads" (which is just for books and book lovers) and I have a goal to try and read 10 books. I know it's not a lot; but for someone who is trying to get back into reading, it's a lofty goal. So far, I have 1, which really doesn't count, because I only had about 15 pages of Errol's biography to go when 2014 hit, so it wasn't difficult to finish my first book. Last year, I made a goal to read 10 books and I only read 4. Haha.

>...and Christopher Plummer is from Canada !

>(sorry can't seem to resist pointing out here the nationality of talented people - if that nationality is Canadian.)

And the film version of Barrymore now available on DVD was filmed at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, where the magnificent Plummer had just completed playing the role in 30 stage engagements. (Yet more Canadian chest thumping here).

Hey, Andy, I have that book too ! I devoured most of it when I first received it as a gift, a couple of years ago.

I like all the features they provide at the end of each article - like, "Don't Fail to Notice", "Best Line", "What They Wrote at the Time", "Bet You Didn't Know" etc. It's quite a fun read.

Every time I get a book like this, I always like to check out and count up how many of the films listed I've seen. I try to get a hold of the ones I haven't (sometimes a challenge), but for some reason I'm always gratified to discover that usually I've seen most of them.

I did this the first few years I had Film Noir: An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style, edited by Alain Silver and Elizabeth Ward. (several newer editions out since this one, which is copyright 1992.)

I had fun reading about all the noirs I'd seen, and getting ideas on which ones I wanted to see but were as yet unavailable (for years I went in quest of "They Live by Night" and "Pickup on South Street" until finally I got TCM and saw them there !)

LOL. No way would I read anything by Danielle Steele! Yes, Eugenia has read the book and gave it a mixed review. So do I so far. Too much information about people she worked with, though some of it is interesting. Depends on how much you already know about Hollywood back then....
