Ole Olson and Chic Johnson

Recommended Posts

Ollie Olson and Chic Johnson was a comady team { think Abbott and Costello } who came out of vaudville and burlesque in the 1930's.> Their biggest hit was a Broadway show called "Hellzapoppin" in the late 30's. Short gag bits { Blackouts } crazy antics { think Spike Jones without the music }. The audiences had never seen anything like it.Mad comic bits, people planted in the audiences, no two nights were ever the same. Universal made a movie of it in the early 1940's and it was just as mad. I remember seeing the film in the 1950's and laughing my head off. They did a few other films and returned to Broadway and Vegas. They tried TV in the 50's , but without much success. They did have a big influence on the humor of Ernie Kovacs and Rowan and Martin "Laugh-In"
