"That's Overkill"

I occasionally like to watch clip shows or retrospectives but over 8 HOURS worth? "That's Entertainment 1,2&3" followed by "That's Dancing". I think it would have been wiser to air these films on successive nights so that A) We could have had ONE movie to watch last night B) those who like these kinds of shows could see them all, without being CHOKED with an 8 hr. slice.

I sit down to watch "That's Entertainment 1" and it seems like this movie has been on for only a half hour and then the end credits come on, you look at the clock and it is two hours and 15 minutes later. I bet it was a thrill to walk out of the theatre after seeing "That's Entertainment 1" and the wonderful movies featured in this film when they were first released. You feel all warm and happy inside after experiencing such great film making. It is just wonderful.

I want to agree with my esteemed colleague on the scheduling of the three"That's Entertainment" films and "Dancing Lady". I could only watch "That's Entertainment 1" because I have to go to work in the morning. It would have been better to schedule "That's Entertainment 1" on Monday October 4, That's Entertainment 2" on Tuesday October 5. On the following Monday schedule "That's Entertainment 3" and "Dancing Lady" on Tuesday October 12. In any case, let's enjoy great musicals and great film-making on Mondays and Tuesdays in October 2004 on TCM!!!

Shoot, I was happy as a fly on horse poo. What a pleasure it was to tape all 3 musical extravaganza's in sequence and in one night.

Of course I got tired but I just let the tape roll and I could watch it whenever I choose to. Perhaps today.

Hot dog!

I'll never forget seeing That's Entertainment at a theater in Westwood, CA just after it opened. I was absolutely enchanted! While I had always been a classic movie fan (this was in the days before TCM), this movie was a revelation! When it played on my cable station in LA (the old Z Channel, does anyone remember it?) I taped it and watched it over and over so much I wore the tape out. Each time I watched it I saw something different and it never failed to bring a smile to my face. Stars, costumes, set designs, scripts, music; it made me understand and appreciate just what went into making movies. There was so much to see, that TE, and its later sequels, was almost too much to digest, even after many viewings. So, I can understand why you feel it was too much to air them all in one night.

Perhaps its like the box of Godiva chocolates; absolutely the best, but if you eat too many at one time you can wind up with a real stomach ache!

I have to agree with Mongo - I thought it was great that they played them all consecutively. Just think of someone who's not familiar with the MGM musicals seeing them for the first time (which may have happened since most people have TCM and could've flipped it on) - being engulfed by hours of the greatest entertainment of all time - it's like you died and went to heaven. I can never get tired of watching the "That's Entertainment" movies.

Hope this is the right place for this comment about

TCM doing dancing and musicals.

-------------

Thanks to TCM for putting on all these great films without

commercials to ruin things.

I am enjoying the musicals and dancing, but I want

to say something I have long thought:

I see "That's Entertainment" and talk by and about Gene Kelley and others (I can' bring myself to criticize Fred Astaire, he is great, and other men are also great dancers).

However it is the women dancers that make the performances.

I don't think enough attention is paid to this fact.

Its like ballet, the men are good, but the stars are the women--and they do it on their toes (ballet) or in high heels. And the great clothes and costumes.

There is nothing like watching someone dance like Sid (Cyd?) Charisse (sp?) or Ginger Rogers--there are so many great and beautiful women dancers .

Men talk like women are sort of sidekicks, rather than the main stars.

Am I getting my point across here?

To those who didn't like all 3 "That's Entertainment" on

one night--that's what a VCR is for. I taped it and

still am watching part II. I am glad they were all

together, as it made it easy to tape. Now I have them

all to watch whenever I feel like it.

Don't let the time they happen to come on TV mean

anything as far as watching them. We can now watch

what we feel like watching just about anytime.

BTW, I get DISH satellite, and I used to tape one thing

while watching another. DISH doesn't allow that.

Why are they so out of it. Its not hard to set things

up so that this is possible. If cable can do it, certainly satellite can do it. I tried to tell them that, but

they put it off into the indefinite future.

Maybe if enough people put some pressure on them?

Exactly! Van

(I am used to the usenet convention of everything getting

quoted with > < . BTW, do many of you ever visit Usenet

forums. I was on the net long before there was any web,

and Usenet and email was all we had. It worked. Of course,

all the graphics are great, high speed etc. I used to sit

there with my 2400 bps modem. We thought it terms of a few Kbytes of data--I would never consider dealing with something like a whole Meg. I had no idea things would explode as they did.)

Er--except that Astaire was essentially the choreographer of all those dance routines (had much help from his assistant Hermes Pan) and was unquestionably the better dancer. The thing that makes Astaire and Rogers so magical is the way they blended together. Rogers was a wonderful dancer to watch, no question about it, but had nowhere near the technical ability of say, Cyd Charisse or Vera-Ellen.

What she did have all over those two was her acting ability. She was so expressive and subtle. Watch only her face sometime during one of his songs to her, or during any of their dances. Her responses to him were what made him a romantic leading man despite his complete lack of Clark Gable-ishness.
