starliteyes
Thanks, Miles. I had been aware of George in the Love You Didn't Do Right By Me number for years, but I had never noticed him in the Mandy number before. Next: What do Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Carmen Miranda have in common?
MilesArcher
They all wore trousers before it was widely acceptable for women to do so. Apparently, Carmen also had a few pairs of shoes.
starliteyes
I hadn't thought of that, Miles, even though it is true. No, what I'm looking for is something in common they had with a particular role that they played. After giving it some more thought, you can add Barbara Stanwyck to the list. starliteyes
Hint: The Katharine Hepburn movie in which she played the type of role that they all have in common is on TCM's schedule for this week as one of the SUTS' movies.
Azure
Is it that they've each played a dual role in a film? Katharine Hepburn - Quality Street Marlene Dietrich - Witness for the Prosecution Greta Garbo - Two-Faced Woman Carmen Miranda - Copacabana (Barbara Stanwyck - The Lady Eve)
starliteyes
You got it, Azure, although I wouldn't exactly call it playing a dual role, i.e., playing twins. They were all playing someone who pretends to be someone else. Actually, Witness for the Prosecution was not the movie I had in mind for Dietrich, although you are not wrong. I was thinking of The Flame of New Orleans. Another point that I wanted to make about these roles is that, for the most part, they pretended to be someone else without doing very much at all to alter their appearance. A perfect example of this would be Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve, convincing Henry Fonda she's a completely different person than the one he had fallen in love with previously and yet looking just the same. Excellent, Azure. Your thread.
Azure
Thanks, Star. Their roles are described by some as "dual roles", but I see your point. Maybe we can call them "sort-of dual roles". LOL I had forgotten about Marlene Dietrich in The Flame of New Orleans. I haven't seen that film in a long time. I'm a little too tired to think of anything right now, so I'll leave the thread open.
