jf51381
Hi everybody! Does anyone know how Virginia Mayo is doing these days? I had read that she was hospitalized with pneumonia. That is too bad---she is one of the main reasons why I first became interested in old movies--ever since seeing The Princess and the Pirate. I was thinking about writing her a letter with an autograph request, but I do not want to disturb her if she is unwell. I would appreciate any reply to this post, or you may email me at jcforte03@yahoo.com Thanks!
bansi4
I hope that Miss Mayo is doing OK. The lady will be 84 next month and pneumonia could be fatal especially at that age. I did see pictures of her attending functions not that long ago and she looked good. I always liked the sassy Virginia especially in "White Head" with Cagney, "The Best Years of Our Lives", "Red Light" with Raft, "South Sea Woman", "Along the Great Divide", etc. She also had a great pair of gams. Hang in there lady. Mongo
bansi4
Correction: The film in which Miss Mayo appears is correctlty titled "White Heat" with Cagney. Mongo
jf51381
I hope they release White Heat on dvd soon---great picture. Another good one in which she is spunky is The West Point Story with James Cagney and Doris Day. Turner Classic Movies--I badgered my cable company, which is Cablevision, in the hopes that they might carry this station, but it looks like that will not happen anytime soon. I am persuading my family to get the satellite dish--I read the schedule of films that turner airs, and I feel like I am on cloud 999!!
moviejoe79
jf - I was also under Cablevision's thumb until I decided to get a satellite dish a few years ago. Cablevision is a real pain - they own AMC so I think that is the main reason why they won't carry TCM. Getting a satellite system is not very expensive these days, and it is well worth it to get TCM as well as a few other channels that Cablevision doesn't offer. As far as I know the monthly fee for Direct TV is comparable to what Cablevision charges.

encanto8591
moviejoe, I guess it depends where you live because I'm in the Bronx and I've had TCM for a couple of years already. Granted, it took a long time but is here and I think it's part of the basic pkg on Cablevision. AMC is horrible...not so much because they don't show "classic" films but because of the darn commercials. They *do* show good movies but I refuse to deal with a chopped up movie. moviejoe79
encanto - You're right, I've heard that TCM is available to CERTAIN cablevision customers - I don't know why, but they are offering it in different areas. I know that most of the city has always had it. Although I had a friend in Brooklyn who couldn't get it, meanwhile all of my family in Queens has always had it. It's weird - especially when you're dealing with Cablevision which to me is one of the worst companies or affiliates of a company that you'd ever want to deal with. I just find it easier to have a dish. And TCM STILL is not available in my part of Long Island, or many others, since I have friends in different parts of the Island who don't have it either. I just don't understand why Cablevision doesn't have one basic package for their entire region where everyone gets the same channels - especially in the New York metro area. bggalaxy
Back to Miss Mayo. One of my favorite pairings (this should also be on the "pairings" thread) is the Kaye - Mayo films. The average joe gets the beauty.
jf51381
You're right, bggalaxy! The movies she made with Kaye are GREAT. I especially love "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "A Song Is Born." She was just so good--I wish that Hollywood had given her some more challenging roles. I mean, I feel that she had proved herself with "The Best Years of our Lives", "White Heat", "The West Point Story", and "Colorado Territory." She was and is one of the best!! For anybody interested, I know that the magazine "Scarlet Street" has a new interview with her coming out sometime next year. Also, the great magazine "Films of the Golden Age" ran an article on her musical films back in issue #16. It was written by Laura Wagner, who is a great writer who also belives that Miss Mayo was highly talented. I am so happy to post on this site--I am hoping that my Dad converts to the dish soon so that my family will have TCM--I have a feeling he will give it to me as a xmas gift!:) --Jonathan
jf51381
YAY! On the homepage of this site, TCM has a photo of Mayo because they are airing some of her films on November 30 in honor of her 84th birthday. This is great news!! --Jonathan
twtpark
I always thought Virginia Mayo was at her loveliest in "The Flame and the Arrow", She truly had a peaches and cream beauty!
