Please TCM, More EARLY '30s films!!

Recommended Posts

I just love the early to mid Thirties movies. They seem much more adventurous than later years, as the sound era brought a lot of experimentation and great characters actors often with a background in theatre.

Some of my favorites are the B movies from the early Thirties.

Kelly I'm with you! A month focusing on pre-codes would be awesome, kind of like the months we had focusing on comedy, and westerns, etc, in the past. Some of those had 3 featured nights per week plus showing more on weekends sometimes, that would rock!!

Roberta that's a GREAT list, thank you!

And Scottman, yep, the early 30's rock the house!

Thank goodness that TCM does air them fairly frequently, but a spotlight or more would be sweet!

I'd like to see a re-running of the documentary Complicated Women, along with the films that were shown along with it. Several Paramount pre-codes were featured, mostly from Mae West and Marlene Dietrich and also Trouble in Paradise and Design for Living. It would be great if they could pick up some others, like The Story of Temple Drake and some of the Fox films, like Hoopla, Broadway Bad, Born to be Bad, Blood Money and so on.

I know TCM has played a few of these, but an entire series would be very nice.

Tracey, COMPLICATED WOMEN will be airing Jan 24 in the wee morning at 5:15AM! It follows an airing of BABY FACE!!

Taking another glance at the Jan schedule shows quite a few early 30's flix throughout! Highlights are Kay Francis' birthday, plus one of the Friday evenings they are showing pre-code gangster films, but there are lots more too!

George Arliss films from the early/mid 1930's are very entertaining.TCM has a few scheduled for February: "The House of Rothschild" along with "Disraeli". However Arliss starred in quite a few other films from that era: "The Green Goddess" (1930) mixes sly humor with melodrama while Arliss (as the Raja of Rukh) is planning to murder his captives; "The Man Who Played God" (1932); "The Millionaire" (1931) ... and many more. It seems these films aired more often in the past. They deserve some air time. They're enjoyable
