Favorite Star Pairings

Recommended Posts

Often in the movies, studios have paired two stars together. The stars just had chemistry together; they just somehow "clicked" on screen. And often, studios would pair them other films together. Who are some of your favorite such duos?

Mine are:

Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen (Three Little Words, The Belle of New York)

Astaire and Judy Garland (Easter Parade... they were supposed to have been paired again in Barkleys of Broadway which was supposed to have been a sequel, but Garland was rushed into production of Annie Get Your Gun and was replaced by - who else? - Ginger Rogers)

Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson (Show Boat, Lovely to Look At, Kiss Me Kate)

Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson (That Midnight Kiss, Toast of New Orleans)

Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland (Babes in Arms, Girl Crazy, Babes on Broadway, Strike Up the Band, your favorite Andy Hardy movie here)

Gene Kelly and Judy Garland (For Me & My Gal, The Pirate, Summer Stock)

Loved Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire in Holiday Inn and Blue Skies

Esther Williams and (your favorite leading man here)... I think she was very photogenic and worked well with anyone Metro paired her with

Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn

Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews worked so well in Mary Poppins. They were to have appeared together in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, but Andrews felt she was alredy too typecast from previous films, and refused the role of Truly Scrumptious.

Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward

Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor

Rock Hudson/Tony Randall/Doris Day

Your choices are good, though musical pairings only. Is that what you meant to ask?

By no means do I mean solely musicals - our favorite duos from any and all genres are welcome. If you haven't already guessed, I do have a passion for the movie musicals, so most responses which I post to these fora tend to involve musicals to some degree or another. But please do feel free to list your favorite star teams from any film under the sun.

I'll agree with Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride. I've only seen "Back on the Farm" from the Ma & Pa Kettle series and I love it. Are the DVD sets, which feature four Ma & Pa Kettle films in each set, any good? I'd love to get the DVDs but have heard varying opinions of them. If you know, please advise.

Adding to my list, how could I forget Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon? Totally slipped my mind. Loved them in all their films together which I've seen to date... Odd Couple, both Grumpy Old Men films, and Out to Sea.

I can't deny that Astaire/Rodgers worked well together, since RKO paired them together umpteen times, and MGM put them in one film together, but I'll say I'm not too crazy about the younger Astaire of the 30s (with the exception of Top Hat). I'll go more for his films of the 40s and later.

My many picks are:

Greer Garson/Walter Pidgeon (Mrs. Miniver, Madame Curie, Blossoms in the Dust, etc...)

James Cagney/Joan Blondell (Footlight Parade)

June Allyson/Van Johnson (Two Girls and a Sailor)

James Stewart/anyone (but especially Donna Reed in It's a Wonderful Life)

Clark Gable/Jean Harlow (Red Dust, Wife vs. Secretary)

Laurence Olivier/Greer Garson (Pride and Prejudice)

Leslie Caron/Louis Jordan (Gigi)

Maureen O'Hara/John Wayne (The Quiet Man, Rio Grande, McLintock!)

Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers (Top Hat, Swing Time, etc...)

Judy Garland/Gene Kelly (Me and My Gal, The Pirate, Summer Stock)

Olivia De Havilland/Errol Flynn (Robin Hood, Charge of the Light Bragade, Dodge City)

Eddie Bracken/Betty Hutton (Miracle of Morgan's Creek, love that movie!)

Frank Sinatra/Betty Garret (Take Me Out to the Ball Game, On the Town. I wish she had been in more movies, she was always fun to watch.)

I'm sure I'll think of more later...

I can think of quite a few women group (3 or more) films but I can't think of many women pairings that stand out - and I know there were some. Any Ideas? I'll hit myself in the head once I see some suggestions.

pgm80s I had forgotten about them. I've never seen Sleepless in Seattle but I have seen Joe Versus the Volcanoe with the two of them and I hated it. Then let's don't okay let's forget You've Got Mail didn't like that either. I have seen bits and pieces of Sleepless it seems entertaining have to sit down and watch it one of these days.

A pairing I like is Jack Carson with whoever he is supporting be it Ronald Reagan in John Loves Mary, Or Jack with Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce or Jack with James Mason in A Star is Born no one could play the supporting role like Jack Carson be it funny or meanspirited or slimy.

gwtw, Sleepless is the best of their pairing, and if you like Jack Carson you should check out "Old California" with John Wayne, its a western but the Duke plays a pharmacist, its a very good movie that doesn't get mentioned, or at least I like it.

ERROL FLYNN and OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND were ideal screen lovers in THE ADV. OF ROBIN HOOD and THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON. I can't think of two classic stars who equalled them in pure physical chemistry. The big love scene from ROBIN HOOD remains one of the all-time classic romantic moments from any of the Flynn-de Havilland epics.

For an entirely different pair of lovers, I'd say HUMPHREY BOGART and LAUREN BACALL excelled in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, THE BIG SLEEP and DARK PASSAGE.
