LonesomePolecat
I am greatly enjoying this thread. I just realized, I don't know why I didn't previously, but there is only one movie showing at each theater. Or am I reading that wrong? I never knew that it still worked that way in the '30s. When was the "multi-plex" born?
filmlover
Well, the multiplex began to form in the early Seventies, though when I was a kid in the Sixties, we had an Odeon theatre that had two theatres inside.

kingrat
Notice in Hedda's May 14 column that she assumes the producer, not the director, is in charge of the editing phase of the picture. That probably reflected the general case at the time. Notice, also, Sheilah Graham's catty remark about Cary Grant not having dated a woman in some time. This not so gentle reminder was no doubt intended to encourage him to do so.

DougieB
I liked seeing that "All Quiet On The Western Front" is playing at the New Lake. I wonder if many theaters will revive it now that war is looming.
filmlover
I've heard that it will probably never come, that they want peace. Hey, I wonder if that was some fifth column group saying that? They probably do want peace..."a piece of this, a piece of that."

mrroberts
Looks like Dorothy Manners was all wet about Cagney doing "Brother Orchid". He was taking a firm stand about "no more gangster" pictures, and he never did budge from that (until White Heat many years later). So Warners had to persuade Edward G, or Raft, to take those projects. Or maybe, as a last resort, give it to that guy Bogart.
GlamAmor
I absolutely love living in the same town where all this took place, don't you? Los Angeles never ceases to amaze me, nor does learning more about its Hollywood history. What a wonderful idea to choose the greatest year in film and look at it day by day--thank you so much for sharing all this!
