kimbo3200
I almost flipped out when I saw this post! I am in college all the way in Northwest PA, but I live near NYC. Before I read the dates, I thought I wouldn't be able to see any of these! Thank goodness for Winter Break, though. I absolutely love film noir, and seeing some of these films on the big screen will be amazing! I can't wait to see some of these! Thanks for sharing the info! moviejoe79
I live on Long Island not far from Manhattan, so I plan on going to the Film Forum for some of these films myself. I saw the lineup on their website, and it's gonna be great! The Film Forum is very good about showing classics - they play a lot of them. Awhile back I saw the restored print of "Sunset Boulevard" there and it was AWESOME! And the theater was a little more than half full which is a great turnout for a classic. Let me know what movies you guys plan on going to see - we might wind up going to see the same ones!
jf51381
Hi guys!! I definitely plan on going to Film Forum to see The Maltese Falcon and the other one playing that day--I think it it This Gun for Hire. I am probably going to see others as well, but those two are an absolute definite. Actually, I think I am also going to go the very first day of the festival as well--Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce. I live relatively closeby--in Merrick, LI. I really do think it would be very nice if we could all meet up for some of these. I am an interpreter (Spanish/English) during the day, and I work at Barnes and Noble at night, and I have loved these films since I was about 12--it hasn't been that long because I am only 23, but I am having a ball watching and learning. My goal one day is to see sing standards and jazz at night on the side in a small club and write--my own fiction and about these old films. Do you guys ever read this magazine called Films of the Golden Age? The amount of research that goes into it is simply amazing. Well, I am sorry for rambling. I hope to hear from you soon! KeithFromKC
I am familiar with the Film Forum via ads in the VILLAGE VOICE and The NEW YORK TIMES, and man, am I envious! The Film Noir fest looks amazing, but I have ventured out to Film Forum's website in the past and am impressed by their eclectic mix of modern 'arthouse' films and a good number of classic films. I have mentioned in other posts that Kansas City has more arthouse theaters than a smaller city should be allowed (I am completely THANKFUL for this), but they will only show classics a couple of times a year. For classic films on the big screen, I usually have to go to a screening at a college, museum, or my local library (many of these are free!). Anyway, I am in awe of not only Film Forum, but also many of the other wonderful theaters in NYC that I've only read about. If I lived in NYC, I would probably get little done, because I would probably spend much of my time in some of these theaters! I have been all over the country, but have never made it to NYC. When I do finally make it there, Film Forum will definitely be on the agenda. To all who make it to the Film Noir fest, well, again, I am completely envious! deeanddaisy666
I am finding it hard to breathe, since so much ecstasy is so close but so far. I am in Westchester, a thirty.minute.drive from Manhattan, on a good day. But I can't go. I can't take off from work. I am this.close.to.retirement and I can't.take.off. jf51381, you just detailed my fantasy, about being locked in a room with every b/w film until I had seen them all. So, such is life. I can't see ALL the films at the Film Forum, therefore I won't see any of them. But thanks to your post, I called the Film Forum, and joined as a member. And they are NOT going to have that breathtaking array of films all in a row again, but they will send members an email with dates for when the individual films will be shown. Because I will.be.living.there when I retire. So, happy, happy, joy, joy, jf51381, I am in heaven. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
tflight9
Glad to see so many young guys so savvy about classic film noir of the '40s--especially since I write for FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE and have a Robert Mitchum article coming up soon. I've seen all these "oldies" on the big screen and it's nice to know they're still so appreciated.
KeithFromKC
I've seen the magazine FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE mentioned here a couple of times and it is an invaluable source of information for fans of classic film. My only complaint is that there are not more stories on or about silent film and it's stars. Having said that, I never miss an issue. Great stuff...... kimbo3200
jf51381 ~ I've always wanted to write a fiction book on old movies (if that is what you were talking about in your post) and actually, I'm trying to now, but...that's cool. Anyway, I won't be home until mid-December, but I really wanted to see The Big Heat with Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame. I've wanted to see that movie for such a long time and I love both of those stars! I think that one is on the 16th of Dec. and I think the other movie is The Woman in the Window (?) or it's one with Edward G. Robinson and one of the Bennett sisters. I forget. Anyway, I hope I can get there that day, because that would be so cool to watch it on the big screen! And I must say that I've never heard of the magazine Films of the Golden Age (sorry to you who writes for it, but I'm young). It sounds really interesting, how do you get it? (like a subscription or something of that sort?)
tflight9
Re: The magazine FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE... You can write for a subscription (or sample copy) to: FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE, 301 E. 3rd St., Muscatine, IA. 52761 or call 1-800-383-3198 (Ext. 357). It's a quarterly mag and also available at larger newsstands (at $4.95 per issue in U.S.) or at bookstores like Barnes & Noble. Current issue (FALL 2004) features Part 2 of a feature article on ANN SHERIDAN--as well as GEORGE RAFT, and character actor EDWARD EVERETT HORTON. jf51381
Hi all! kimbo, I definitely want to see The Big Heat on the big screen, and I will be around on that day. I saw it on television a couple of months ago and was blown away by the intensity. It's awesome, and I think you will love it. Gloria Grahame is amazing in it. tflight, I really admire that you write for Films. One of my dreams is to write for them one day. May I be bold enough as to ask how you first became involved with it? I absolutely love it, and I think Laura Wagner is amazing. I am looking forward to reading Killer Tomatoes at some point. I work at Barnes and Noble, and through the computer, I read that she is at work on a book about Virginia Mayo, for which I am psyched. I am getting ready to start writing an article for the magazine about one of my favorites of the golden age. Thanks for writing back, everyone! Sincerely, Jonathan Forte
tflight9
Jonathan Forte: You can submit articles to Editor, Bob King--or send a query to him if you'd rather e-mail or phone him as to subject matter. He's interested in film writers who have carefully researched anything submitted. I made sure the actors/actresses I wrote about were not already covered by checking the index that appears on every issue.
kimbo3200
tflight9 ~ thanks for the information on the magazine. I am going to send for a sample copy (you said they did that, right?) That would be so cool to write for them! I have written about old movies, but always for school projects, so it was about the era in itself, but I would love to try writing about one person, that sounds like fun. Anyway, thanks for the information!
richardny4me
FORCE OF EVIL is being shown in a new 35 mm restored print on November 30. That alone is worth seeing, but it is on a double feature with THE NAKED CITY - which, like FORCE OF EVIL was also filmed in classic black and white right on the streets of New York. Films shot in "real" NYC are nothing special now but this was highly unusual for 1948. And both films feature a very different NYC from the limited filming in NYC of the "On The Town" musical number and the opening and closing dock scenes in ON THE TOWN, which also was filmed in the city around that time. moviegeek3000
I'm flying up for this also. In a day of Hollywood FX driven crap, this festival, and this style of film make me wish America would go broke again. I've got most of those films on DVD(well, the DVD released ones at least), but Noir runs far deeper with me than just a video library. I'm also a film student, writng my second screenplay and trying to perfect the craft of story-telling so when I meet with the right producer; I will have my opportunity to start making quality noir pictures. Great post! Great magazine, and if you write with those guys, you're a great writer! I had the pleasure of meeting James Ursini & Alain Silver at a Writer's seminar in LA last year(even signed my Film Noir Reader for me). Those two gentlemen are the best Film Noir researchers/analysts I've ever heard of.
jf51381
Hi moviegeek, I am so happy to hear that you will be making noirs one day. I am sure that they will be great. It is my favorite genre, but I do not know too too much yet. I have a few books about it. I am just so psyched to be seeing lots of these for the first time. It is only an hour trip for me because I live in Long Island. Part of me wishes I had studied film in college. I love my job, but these films and the music from those times are my true passions I think. I am trying to get my writing off the ground. I took a creative writing class in college and loved it. We'll see how everything goes...good luck with all of your endeavors, and perhaps I will see you at the festival. I plan on being there next weekend (Friday I think) for the first two. Sincerely yours, Jonathan Forte:)
