pgm80s
I went out to a local bar tonite with my roomates to watch the results of the election and the bartenders actually bought us several drinks, how nice is that. Anyways I ended up spending like an hour talking to the guy the guy next to me about classic movies, does anybody else just randomly meet people like this and end up talking about old movies because I tend to do it a lot, I was just curious. moviejoe79
Pete - I NEVER meet people who know the classics. Where I work, there's only one person out of about 120 employees who is an avid TCM watcher. Some others know the classics, but not like us. Maybe I'm just not meeting the right people like you are! gwtwbooklover
pgm80s how about converting people to TCM. Or selling them on old movies with success. Makes me so happy. A friend and I have a date to watch the first version of The Manchurian Candidate as soon as we can. Then lets don't forget immersing my children into the classic movies. It makes one feel like johnny appleseed
pgm80s
I've converted a few of my parents friends to TCM, but I cant think of any of my friends that have started to watch it regularly. I sell people on movies to see all the time though, its also how I learn about movies to watch by listening to others favorites and what they like. evh55
I think you folks are correct; it is difficult to get people interested in classic movies. For some reason it seems like they just can't handle black and white as opposed to color. More than once I have had people say they simply can't watch a movie because its B&W. I don't get it but that is what they say. I have managed to convert a few people over tho. I will ask them who their favorite film star is, and then suggest a movie starring the person they like. Like a friend who just loved Cary Grant. I suggested he watch Arsenic and Old Lace and he thought it was great! Then I suggested one or two more and now he is a big fan. Sometimes people need a little puch in the right direction.
moviejoe79
evh55 - you're absolutely right. Sometimes all people need is a push. My best friend is a movie lover, and I've gradually had him watch some of the classics and he's enjoyed a lot of them - especially "Casablanca" "The Sunshine Boys" and "Psycho". But you're right that too many people are just against Black and White - I've had people tell me that too - that they won't watch a movie because its B&W, which to me is just stupid on their part. loveoldmovies04
Well being the age I am I guess it's harder to meet people that are classic movie fans. I find myself mainly meeting people that were around during these film eras like my theatre teacher or my parents friends and when I start talking to them about old movies, thats when its hard to stop. My boyfriend actually has and interest in some old movies like On the water front[/i] and other marlon brando films. One time I made two of my friends whatch gone with the wind and one loved it and the other couldnt stand it.. can you believe that!?! they couldnt stand one of the greatest movies of all TIME! -phoebe
moviegeek3000
Hey, this is what my social life 'is' in a sense. I start talking the classics(I'm 24)with whoever's next to me when I am drinking whether they want to hear about or not. My problem is I'll never encourage any 'non B&W' types to give them a shot, because when I drink; the World of modern movies gets bashed and often someone else's opinions. Sort of a "Your favorite movie sucks, and now you're going to hear why!" I like it this way. Limited number of true classics fans these days puts it's own satisfying feeling in knowing you know all about something that nearly everyone else has chosen to ignore. Sort of a Private Club, and the password is'Us.'
eddie71664
I have one guy at work that likes classics as much as I do. He has a "Hollowells film guide" and we randomly open to a page and see who knows the most about a particular movie. We also do the "guess which movie this line is from" gig and needless to say most people there just don't get it. And pgm80s when I go to a bar my mind shuts down immediately. Hard for me to remember some of the oldies when Mr. Baccardi is present. But I do a mean Rick Blaine when called upon. Eddie
