flashback42
88 Views, no bites. Trying one more clue, working through the stars. The Public Defender has had several series roles, most recently as the benevolent father of two overachieving sons. One son was an FBI Agent; the other was a mathematics whiz who got his Doctorate when very young. The actor in the defendent role recently had a cameo in a sitcom. When a main character was in a loony bin, this guy was the patient in the next bed. Will retire the question if not answered tonight.
flashback42
At 110 Views, retiring the question. *The Law*, first aired 22 Oct 1974, Was a pilot that was followed by a 4-episode miniseries, that failed to generate a series. Star Judd Hirsch went on to play major roles in Taxi, Delvechio and Numb3rs. The space-cadet walkingwounded client was played by Gary Busey. Both very good performances. Maybe the time was not yet right for such a series. Open thread.

CineramaRick
It must be *A Christmas Without Snow* (TVM 1980) starring John Houseman (who won his supporting Oscar for *The Paper Chase* - 1973)) and Michael Learned who, of course, was Olivia Walton, the beloved matriarch of *The Waltons* television series. Back to you, Lana, or the thread is open.

flashback42
Late 1980s. 2-part miniseries. Horror. Attempts to touch all bases on what could threaten and terrify children.
flashback42
Even the hallway bullies at school had supernatural connotations.
flashback42
School-age kids defeat a monster, but it turns out to be temporary. It comes back when they are adults, and they must confront it again. Only one has stayed in their home town. The others must gather from other parts of the world. One of them, learning of the call to return, commits suicide.
flashback42
Correct, Sixes. The miniseries did justice to the source nove. I figured the question would collapse when I clued in "Penny Wise the Clown" Sixes' thread.
flashback42
Early 1990s TVM. Built-in tributes to a lot of 1950s series.
flashback42
The TVM was one of a series. Lots and lots of cameos from 50s-60s Western TV series. Some in their character names, some not.
flashback42
One of the guest cameos: An actor who was a teenager in a midcentury series turns up in this TVM as the same character, fully adult, teaching horsemanship to actors in the budding movie industry. Serving as stand-in in some of the difficult cases.
flashback42
Another guest cameo: Midcentury series about a man who worked various assignments; Cavalry scout, lawman, ranch hand, etc. Had a government contract that sent him in the same direction as the title hero. They escorted each other through some hostile territory.
flashback42
Framing device for these nostalgia nuggets: The title hero is on an urgent dash across the West to San Francisco. A deadline; an event that many others also want to attend.
flashback42
The star of a 50s series about a knockabout dandy, sometimes a lawman, appears as that character serving as referee at a championship boxing match.
lavenderblue19
The Gambler Returns, The Luck Of the Draw I'll leave it to you for the stars, but Gene Barry is the last clue?
flashback42
Correct. The plot had Kenny Rogers' "Gambler" character in a hurry to get to San Francisco for a special high-stakes poker game. Along the way the folks he met included Clint Walker as Chyenne Bodie, and Gene Barry, as mentioned, in the role of Bat Masterson. Others: Hugh O'Brien as Wyatt Earp; David Carradine as Kung Fu 's Caine. Brian Keith in his The Westener persona. A real nostalgia roundup focusing on the midcentury TV Westerns. One point noted: Doug McClure was just "Doug" and James Drury was just "Jim". No use of their Man From Shiloah characters' names, "Trampas" and "The Virginian". Chuck Conners and Johnny Crawford from The Rifleman were in different scenes. Crawford was the one helping start the movie business. When it got to the big game in Frisco, Jack Kelly was present as Bart Maverick. lavenderblue's thread. Edited by: flashback42 on Feb 3, 2012 12:50 AM
lavenderblue19
Thanks. This 1980's mini-series is based on a best selling book. An impressive cast including Oscar winners. It's focus is on the early life of someone still alive today. What's impressive besides the cast, is how a life that started out so screwed up turned into a succesful respected one. Name the mini series and maybe some of the stars that appeared in it.
lavenderblue19
One of the the characters is a neurotic, overly possessive caretaker.
lavenderblue19
Extreme wealth.
MilesArcher
It sounds like "Little Gloria...Happy At Last" which was about the custody battle for young Gloria Vanderbilt. Besides Christopher Plummer and Martin Balsam, it featured some real "Grande Dames" of acting, Angela Lansbury, Bette Davis, Maureen Stapleton, and Glynis Johns. By the way, even though she had been a major star for fifty years, in the credits, Miss Davis' first name is spelled B-e-t-t-y, according to IMDB.
MilesArcher
Thanks. There was another TV movie about a real life figure who inspired the song "I Found A Million Dollar Baby In The Five And Ten Cent Store". Who was this person, what was the name of the TV movie, and who starred in the title role?
thestick
Miles this is a hard one. I could only find Bicentennial Man 1999 starring Robin Williams. Henry James doing the music but Bing Crosby and Doug Gillepsie are also mentioned with this particular song. Let me know if I'm on the right track.
MilesArcher
You are way off, stick. "Bicentennial Man" was a theatrical movie. I'm talking about a made for TV movie from the eighties about a real life wealthy woman.
lavenderblue19
Good clue- Woolworth and EF Hutton heiress Barbara Hutton , Poor Little Rich Girl starring Farrah Fawcett playing probably one of the silliest, wasteful people I can think of. ???
