therealfuster
who are also fine actresses. I shall nominate Carroll Baker. Personally I liked her fresh scrubbed gorgeous look in "Giant" but it had to happen that they would glamour her up to play the Baby in "Harlow", but she still shines through. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard at a comedy performance of the magnitude she gave in the Southern Gothic satire called "Babydoll" and to this day she is still lovely and still talented. I could also add to the good looking roster, Shirley Knight who was excellent in so many films, Alida Valli and Ann Sheridan. On the other hand, there are some great looking actresses of whom I see little talent like Gene Tierney, but until I've seen all their films I shall remain mute. I used to feel that way about Merle Oberon, having only seen her in Wuthering Heights, and realized I had been unfair after I saw her in These Three and That Uncertain Feeling, in which she equitted herself most equitably. blonderbbt
I nominate Maureen O'Hara, a beautiful woman who proved you could be tough, a man's equal and feminine at the same time. Not easy characters to portray.
therealfuster
man's woman. I remember reading about her slugging Errol Flynn for getting a bit risque with her when she came to Hollywood. I've always liked her performance in Jamaica Inn, though she is so young one hardly can recognize her. Thanks!
garboloygrant
I think Myrna Loy would fit in this catagory. Along with Priscilla Lane, Joan Fontain, Ginger Rogers, Irenne Dunn, Garbo (of course!), and Greer Garson.
eddie71664
I have always been a Bette Davis man, but the first time that I set my eyes on Greer Garson I never looked back Eddie

pgm80s
I saw a younger picture of my high school english teacher once and she looked like she could be a twin to Greer Garson. Just thought I would share, I haven't seen her in a few years so i never mentioned it to her.
kimbo3200
I agree with everything people have said so far. I too really enjoy Greer Garson and Maureen O'Hara and I think they were both very beautiful as well. For the latter one, it is hard to be tough and attractive at the same time, as someone mentioned before, and Maureen O'Hara made it look so easy. I have also admired Barbara Stanwyck. I think she was incredibly talented and could play almost any role, and she too was beautiful.
pgm80s
I forgot to mention before that Maureen O'Hara is one of my favorite actresses. She was great in anything I've seen her in, and she looks amazing in technicolor just watch The Quiet Man if anyone still hasn't seen it. Guest
I'm amazed that no one selected Vivien Leigh and Donna Reed, both of whom had a natural, flawless, exquisite beauty.
deeanddaisy666
Jean Arthur, Gene Tierney (in 'Blithe Spirit'), Carole Lombard (sigh, she was sooooo gorgeous), Lizabeth Scott (aw, I just love that voice), and Jean Harlow. In the 'I don't get it' category, I'd have to put Veronica Lake. Neither pretty nor talented, imo. How about less than beautiful women? Edna May Oliver, Ethel Barrymore. blonderbbt
Just thought of two more. And both redheads! Lucille Ball in her RKO/MGM days was so beautiful she was nicknamed "Technicolor Tessie." Kay Kendall, the brillian British comedienne and wife of Rex Harrison, another beautiful woman who could play comedy well. Blonde Rabbit (well, strawberry blonde)

gingerrogers25
I'd have to say the most beautiful women of hollywood, who could act with any man, pull off any scene and steal any film would have to be Grace Kelly and Joan Crawford. I swear, in color or in silver, they were so gorgeous and so perfect in their own ways. Grace kelly is especially beautiful in 'Rear Window' when she leans in to kiss Jimmy Stewart. Makes me rather disdainful of my brown curly hair and tanned skin. Speaking of which - does anyone know of any actresses that had naturally curly hair? I've been trying to see if there were any, but they all either straighten it or they simply never made it to hollywood. I'm talk about classic actresses, naturally. Nowadays we've got Meg Ryan and such. (Shirley Temple didn't, get over it.)

slappy3500
Grace Kelly in "Rear Window"....The Jimmy Stewart character is an IDIOT!!! Vasillating in his feelings for her. She's gorgeous, she brings him over dinner from a fancy restraunt, she's rich, intelligent, affectionate, and even keeps him company while he's wearing that body cast. I'll tell you ONE thing.... if it were ME no doctor would need to remove that cast. One touch from Grace and ah,err , well, let's just say I would have a physiological reaction that would open that baby UP!!!!

wmcki76058
My personal favorite for most beautiful woman would have to be Jeanette MacDonald. That gorgeous red hair. Those sea blue eyes. That smile. Wow! She (in my opinion) personified the 1930s look. Just watch Sweethearts. You'll see what I mean.
gingerrogers25
I was reading my answer when I was actually quite ashamed of myself: Greta Garbo. Possibly the closest thing humans will get to perfection. I'm so glad they kept her after sound hit hollywood, accent and all. She makes us Swedes oh-so-proud. Her and Ingred Bergman. But Garbo - by jove, I'd give quite a bit to look like her. Like my Godfather poster. Or even cable (god forbid).
erzbet
In general I'd say the female stars of the 30's were the most beautiful. My particular favorites are JEANETTE MacDONALD -- red gold hair, sea green eyes, peaches and cream complexion - and the voice of an angel. She was adept at comedy as well as more serious roles and has given me more pleasure than another actress that graced the silver screen. IRENE DUNNE -- completely irrestible - though I loved her comedies best. Her LOVE AFFAIR was terrific and I particularly enjoyed her work in I REMEMBER MAMA. GREER GARSON -- she's my daisy! What a wonderful warm and beautiful actress. What a joy she is to watch in RANDOM HARVEST or GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS, not to mention MRS. MINIVER and MRS. PARKINGTON. LILLIAN GISH -- matchless! Watching her act is like watching a masterpiece come to life. And wasn't she terrific in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER! MAUREEN O'HARA - She could do just about anything and do it with style -- THE QUIET MAN would be sorely lacking without her shining presence.
