I don't know if you remember in 1999 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences wanted to give Elia Kazan an honorary oscar. There was an uproar about it because he was a "whistle-blower" during the HUAC trials in 1952. Most people didn't think he should be given the award. When he was given the award a lot of folks refused to applaud him while some applauded but stayed seated and others gave him a standing ovation. Gregory Peck was one of the major supporters of Kazan being given it because he believed that someone's work should be separated from his life


Same thing with Mel Gibson, Joan Crawford, Roman Polanski etc.
