A Star Is Born... What is it about this 1954 George Cukor masterpiece? It always seems to be getting a raw deal in one way or another. Of course, the history of how the movie was mutilated by Warner Brothers and then triumphantly restored by the late preservationist Ronald Haver is now as legendary as the film itself. However, another aspect of this version of A Star Is Born that is also deserving of special attention is the matter of itscompanion soundtrack album. Since the films release (nearly fifty years ago), there have been various soundtrack albums issued by Columbia Records and later Sony Special Products. Although these soundtracks contain Judy Garlands brilliant vocal performances of The Man That Got Away, Born In A Trunk and Its A New World, they do not contain Ray Heindorfs masterful background music (apart from a Main Title selection on one release) or any of Judys briefer numbers in the picture (the delightful Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, for example). Because A Star Is Born is such an important and cherished Hollywood classic, it seems that it would naturally qualify for the deluxe, fully restored, 2 CD boxed set treatment. However, Ive learned that Turner Classic Movies Music and Rhino Records (the folks who produce those wonderfully meticulous soundtrack restorations) cannot acquire the rights to A Star Is Born, which are owned by Sony Music for all eternity. Heres what I propose that faithful fans of this superlative musical should doWrite a brief but persuasive note to Sony Music Entertainment President Tommy Mottola and beg him to release a definitive A Star Is Born soundtrack album with tons of exciting supplemental extras. Mr. Mottolas address is as follows: Mr. Tommy Mottola, President Sony Music Entertainment 550 Madison Avenue New York, N.Y. 10022 If writing a letter is too Pony Express for you, the main switchboard number for Sony Music is: (212)-833-8000 (please note that it is somewhat challenging to find an actual human being to take your call. Big surprise.) Ive already drafted my own letter to Mr. Mottola but there is strength in numbers and the more requests Sony receives, the better our chances of getting a fitting soundtrack tribute to A Star Is Born released. Thank You for your assistance in this culturally important endeavor!
