Guest MacFaydian, Tiger Lily
I know that TCM had a halloween special of vampire movies all day long. Of course I missed it and was hoping that one of you lovely TCM fanatics would give me a review of all the vampire movies that were played. scsu1975
Well, that was twelve years ago, but from what I remember, all those vampire movies sucked.
misswonderly3
What? What the frig ? ! Rich, whatever possessed you (sorry, perhaps an unfortunate choice of words) to resurrect (another unfortunate word) this thread? It's not even close to Hallowe'en yet, and in any case, this was from twelve - count em, twelve (that's 12) years ago! I think you just did it "because you could." And in fact, I'm impressed. scsu1975
this was from twelve - count em, twelve (that's 12) years ago! Well, some questions take awhile to answer. Heck, it took over 300 years before somebody proved Fermat's Last Theorem.
misswonderly3
Yes, perhaps the thread was sleeping in a coffin for twelve years, and then awoke to find it was "undead". Anyway, I never did understand about integers and elliptic curves and such. I always thought they were things decent people didn't talk about. Who could trust someone who looked like this? I've little doubt he had some pretty batty connections.

LornaHansonForbes
I'm with the rest of you, this is friggin weird, but since the man asked a favor, I may as well try to help. While I have no idea what films played on the day to which you refer in your original post, I can at least give you my top ten favorite vampire movies (a topic on which I am a minor aficianado) in no particular order: Nosferatu, (192?) Dracula (1931) (flawed, but essential) Dracula (The Spanish Version) (1931) Mark of the Vampire (1935) (flawed, but so atmospheric) Return of the Vampire (1944) (maybe my personal fave) Scars of Dracula (1970) Dracula Has Risen From the Grave (1968) (flawed, but a gorgeous film) The Brides of Dracula (1960?) Nosferatu (1979) La Dinastia de Conde Dracula (1980?)- trippy low budget Mexican movie. The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1975)- sue me, I like it. honorable mention: The Monster Squad, 1987- not strictly a vampire movie, but some effective scenes. Waxwork (1988)- ditto. and the worst: The Return of Dracula (1958) The Blood of Dracula (195?)- but it is deliciously baaaad. Dracula AD 1972 Dracula (1979) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) Masterpiece Theatre Presents: Dracula (2005) The Twilight Trilogy
misswonderly3
Lorna, you are a little unpredictable in your tastes, so I'm not sure if you'd enjoy the film I'm about to recommend or not. Jim Jarmusch's films are not for everyone; maybe you don't like him, maybe you've never even heard of him. Anyway, he recently released a vampire film called "Only Lovers Left Alive". It's very different from most vampire movies, it's sort of ....genteel, for lack of a better word. It stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, who I have to say is very sexy in it. IMHO. Here's a link with more info about it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714915/ Oh, and by the way, scsu, I bet the vampires in this film have not only heard of Pierre de Fermat, they could probably recite his last theorem without missing a beat. LornaHansonForbes
Jarmusch (sp?) made a vampire movie?!?! Go figure. (Hiddles is fine as hell, I grant you that.)
LornaHansonForbes
I'm kind of worried that this thread is like the deadly video in The Ring and we're all going to die within 48 hours for having posted in it. Oh well.
joefilmone
I thought this was bit early for Halloween....
darkblue
A vampire movie I can't recommend strongly enough is 'Let Me In' (2010). Of all the vampire movies I've ever seen, this is the one that feels most real. Based on the novel 'Låt den rätte komma in' by John Ajvide Lindqvist - and the Swedish movie 'Let the Right One In', also based on that novel - the screenplay for 'Let Me In, set in Los Alamos, New Mexico, 1983, was developed by both Lindqvist and director Matt Reeves. What a horror movie! What a movie!
scsu1975
Most people aren't aware of the rest of Descartes' famous statement: I think, therefore I am ... afraid of vampires.
scsu1975
and the worst: The Return of Dracula (1958) What, you didn't like the imaginative ways in which Gerald Fried worked "Dies Irae" over and over into the score until you wanted to drive a stake through his heart?
LornaHansonForbes
VAMPIRE NEWS!: I submitted Bela Lugosi's name in the "who deserves to be SOTM...?" thread, and it occurred to me this weird Halloween thread would also be a good place to bring up the fact that Universal has restored the 1931 version of Dracula and- while I have not seen the restored Blu-Ray- there is a featurette here really worth watching on all that they've done to the sound and picture: And here in the iconic "I am, Dracula" scene as restored: that hiss is gone and the scene is so much more effective with dead silence, and with the cleaner print, there are details of that wonderful, decrepit castle set that I can make out for the first time (and I've seen this movie a lot ): Has the October schedule been solidified yet? Because I am dying to see it now that all this work has been done. While I have issues with the 1931 Dracula- it is ultimately a disappointment- I would love to see it as it was seen in 1931, and not with that crap picture and omnipresent hiss and dark as dishwater detail all the other releases have had. The Mummy, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstien, Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Wolf Man have all shown up on TCM: ANY CHANCE YOU GUYS AT TCM CAN WRANGLE THIS "NEW" VERSION FROM UNIVERSAL? misswonderly3
I'd like to see old Bela as Star of the Month sometime - obviously October would be a good month for him, although most likely it'd have to be next year; I'm sure they have the schedule for this October all sewn up by now. If TCM did ever feature Bela Lugosi for SOTM, it'd be a good idea if they threw in the Tim Burton film from 1994, Ed Wood. It's kind of fun in its own right, but in addition, part of the storyline includes Ed Wood resurrecting Bela (sorry, couldn't resist) from relative obscurity, making friends with him, and even persuading him to act in some of his films. Of course, since we're talking about Ed Wood here, I suppose one could question whether he did Lugosi a favour or not. Bela Lugosi is played very sympathetically by Martin Landau, an actor I like. ps: Apropos of nothing, except that I think this actor is very sexy in the (sort of) vampire film "Only Lovers Left Alive", here's a pic of the two leads, Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston. Note they both look very cool, with their shades and all. I realize I may be a little weird to find Tom attractive in this role, as he looks extremely effete (no, does not mean the same thing as "effeminate") and decadent. I love his long dark hair and the look of world-weariness in his eyes (when he's not wearing shades.)
