He deserved nominations for:

*She Wore a Yellow Ribbon*

*Red River*

*The Quiet Man*

*The Searchers*

*The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance*

and he should have won an Oscar for *The Searchers*.

There are few characters in American film as dark as Ethan Edwards and Wayne's performance is both believable and genuine.

I have to add The Sands of Iwo Jima to your list. It's one of the few war films that show the toll it takes on the people involved rather than just macho heroics. Stryker is the kind of man I want training those who must fight-tough but caring. He deserved the nomination; too bad Yellow Ribbon was the same year. Nathan and Stryker are two of a kind just 70 years apart. I agree with you about The Searchers; could anyone else make you care about Ethan as we did?

He did receive a nomination for Best Actor for Sands of Iwo Jima.

I agree with Lynn's choices, but I will add one more:

Best Acting for The Shootist.
