Yes, he was always quite a presence on the screen. Many performances come to mind but one in particular that stays in my mind is his role in INTRUDER IN THE DUST. Strength and dignity he personified.

That was clearly his best role. It is both wonderful and painful to watch him in it. Wonderful because of his commanding performance. Painful thinking of all the performances we don't have of him because he was black. Lena Horne doesn't represent the only collection of lost opportunities due to the idiocy of racism. I like to imagine Shanghai Express with Anna May Wong and Marlene Dietrich playing each others roles.

THE BREAKING POINT is coming up. Hernandez is terrific in that, as well as YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN. Then there's THE SINS OF RACHEL CADE........

Prior to his post-war film appearances (he did some all-colored films in the early 30's) he did some radio work, including a few episodes of THIS IS YOUR FBI.

He's interesting in THE PAWNBROKER with Rod Steiger. He's one of those character actors that provides solid support in a memorable way without chewing scenery or upstaging everyone else. He has a very quiet, assured delivery but it is very powerful to watch on screen.
