Not a fan of LAUGHTON, but he was MAGNIFICENT here ^ deserved another Academy Award shot, of course that legendary cinematic year if 1939, YOU DECIDE?

The official Best Actor contenders for '39 were>

*Robert Donat in Goodbye, Mr. Chips-(*winner)

Clark Gable in GWTW

Laurence 0livier in Wuthering Heights

Mickey Rooney in Babes in Arms

& James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (NYFCC voted for him instead)

& that also epic score by Alfred Newman certainly propelled this one!

Other powerful works that year not in the race>  Henry Fonda in Young, Mr. Lincoln

Spencer Tracy in Stanley and Livingstone

James Cagney in The Roaring Twenties

& several more!!!

Frank Sinatra was born on this day, Dec 12th, in 1915.

My very favorite song he ever sang was "I Fall In Love Too Easily" from ANCHORS AWEIGH.

To sagebrush, tricky answer, do you mean your fav number in one of his flix, or overall???

Nice selection, CL. Lots of subtle touches in that scene.

It also illustrates the importance of a good score.

Very moving.

Lionel Barrymore was born on this day, April 28th, in 1878. Of all the films he made, I think my favorite is YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU. I love this scene in which he explains why he hasn't paid any income taxes in 22 years!

Fred Astaire was born on this day, May 10th, in 1899. One of my favorite clips of him is a video shot in his home, in which he proceeds to play the drums along to a Benny Goodman record!
