KeithFromKC
188 movies! Wow! I used to see that many years ago, but now, with dvds and less time to go to movies, I still see about 75 films a year at the theater. My Top Ten for 2004 are: SIDEWAYS (Saw it Three times! What a great film.) BAD EDUCATION A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT TARNATION DIG! MARIA FULL OF GRACE BEFORE SUNSET CONTROL ROOM VIVA LALDJERIE (VIVA ALGERIA) and yes, NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (Entertainment Weekly called this one of the WORST films of the year and I totally disagree. It brought more laughs than any other movie for me in 2004).....and an honorable mention goes to Morgan Spurlock's fine documentary, SUPER SIZE ME....and will I get flack for totally enjoying TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE?? I have yet to see THE AVIATOR, HOTEL RWANDA, MILLON DOLLAR BABY, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, or KINSEY, so my list is subject to change. I do look forward to what 2005 will bring to the theaters. As much as we all love the classic films, we should always look to what the future of cinema will bring....... emwriterdude
I didn't care much for A Very Long Engagement. It was alright, but I felt that it was a tad on the long side, and some of it was kind of useless. Jodie Foster confused me too, she just popped out of nowhere. I didn't see Tarnation or Dig. Maria Full of Grace I liked, and Before Sunset is on the honorable list. Control Room was alright too, but I'm not big on documentaries. I liked Super Size Me, and that almost made honorable mentions. I felt that Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't deserve a spot, although I did like it. Napolean Dyanmite and Team America are on my list, so you don't get flack.
KeithFromKC
I thought A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT was wonderful. I knew Jodie Foster was in it and her character was definitely part of the story. That she can hold her own in a french film with no english dialogue is pretty impressive to me. The film might be slow for some, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, as I do most of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work (AMELIE, DELICATESSEN, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN). I'm curious as to what you found "useless" about it. Not to judge, but I enjoyed the film from start to finish. I also think the film's star, Audrey Tautou, is really something special. She has a screen presence that is undeniable. As far as Documentaries go, I'm a huge fan of the genre, although I realize they are not for everyone. As was stated in an earlier thread about documentaries, there is a real renaissance taking place in the genre over the past few years. Documentaries show us people and places we never see in ordinary life. If done well, they are educational and even moving. But I can see where most might not find them as entertaining as an action film or a comedy. Anyway, you have chosen some fine films, emwriterdude, and I am curious to see what others enjoyed at the movies in 2004..........
