therealfuster
I was just thinking about Gail Russell, and how good she was in "Angel and the Badman" with the Duke. Then I remembered I had seen Kelly McGillis last nite while flipping channels, which made me think about the film. "Witness" which is so similar in many plot aspects to...voila, "Angel and the Badman". Okay, not a word for word remake, or an exact story copy, but close enough to defy anyone not believing that there was some influence. Can you name a film which you were watching, and then realized how closely it resembled another film, even though the producers of the newer film gave no indication it was copied? ayresorchids
Man, what a great topic! Of course there are many "Prisoner of Zenda" stories (The Phantom President, Dave, The Prince and the Pauper, etc.)--though probably even The Prisoner of Zenda wasn't the first time that theme was used. Then there are variations on "Faust:" Damn Yankees, Bedazzled... They say there are only a few plots in the world, and all entertainments are just variations on them. kenwal34
The original Sahara with Humphrey Bogart used the same theme as the original Lost Patrol. Bataan used the same theme, just an updated setting .
brackenhe
I don't know if these examples count but here goes. 10 Things I Hate About You--A modern version of the Taming of the Shrew, even the characters names are the same Out of the Past--I think it was pretty well known at the time that Against All Odds was a remake of that but I didn't know it until I saw Out of the Past and thought "This plot is almost exactly like Against All Odds." I don't know if this really applies but I was watching one of those PBS Britcoms with my mother (she loves those things) and on the one with Judi Dench (As Time Goes By) her husband was trying to sell his book about their early life to a studio. One of the production people started suggesting changes to the book and I told my mom "That sounds like the plot to Random Harvest." Well, the next line of dialogue out of Dame Judy's mouth was something like "Our story is nothing like Random Harvest." Just cracked me up. And I usually hate those Britcoms. venerados
I noticed that Magnolia was pretty much a copy of Altman's "Short Cuts". Even though the stories were different, the template was the same, complete with a natural disaster to bring all the stories to a simultaneous climax. I don't think Anderson ever specifically said he got the idea from Short Cuts but he did tell Altman "all I ever did was rip you off" And then there was that Vanilla Ice song that he said wasn't stolen from Queen because his had an extra ding.
