chrtbsh
One person that was announced for a special humanitarian award (the Jean Hersholt Award) this year is our own Roger Mayer. Nobody in the film industry has done more for film preservation, in addition to being involved with so many charities. At TCM, this is a very special occasion - the network could not exist if it weren't for the efforts of Mr. Mayer.
classicsfan1119
The Jean Hersholt Award is a biggie, and not one that is handed out lacking a great deal of respect and recognition for the receivee. For his worthwhile efforts in film preservation, charity, and also for keeping TCM on the air, this award was deservedly earned! Congratulations Mr. Roger Mayer! nickdimeo
The first thing that comes to my mind as I think of Mr. Mayer is the 100 Years of Hollywood short that he put together. It's amazing how a clip that runs under ten minutes can have such a hypnotic effect on me. It's one of the greatest things I've ever seen!
spencerl964
Coming in a wee-bit late on this good topic However as to my knowledge-(not the Jean Hersholt-(1886-1957) Humanitarian Award) But this yrs. 2004 Oscars will be presenting a lifetime special career ACADEMY AWARD to Sidney Lumet-(1924-) Reason obviously being he's never as yet won a competitive BD one. Though nominated for "12 Angry Men" (1957)/ "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975)/ "Network" (1976) & 1982's "The Verdict" & I know full-well of the tremendous compilation that TCM still sometimes airs>"100 Years in the Movies" I don't know about Roger Mayer though-(is he a relative of L.B. Mayer-(1885-1957)??? Anyway, that particular compilation was edited by AMPAS editor Chuck Workman-(as you can see, it ends with *"Schindler's List" (1993) & was 1st aired on the 1994 or '95 OSCAR telecast. I've taped that phenomenal pc. of montage everywhere it would fit! I first saw it on TCM around 1997 actually Thank You
moviejoe79
Nick - You're so right about the "100 Years" clip. It may sound stupid, but the first time I saw it I was so overcome I almost cried. It's so moving - so many great scenes and stars, and the movie scores that were picked to correspond with the scenes were perfect. I didn't realize that Mr. Mayer did that, but thank you to him for it. I'd also like to congratulate Mr. Mayer on the Jean Hersholt Award, and I hope that the Academy gives him a nice block of time to receive the award during the Oscar ceremony. Film preservation is EXTREMELY important, and I would love to see it brought up during the Academy Awards, since so many of those movers and shakers must be reminded of it.
