7) When MGM bought the remake rights, their contract stipulated that all existing prints of the 1940 British version be destroyed.  (Apparently there was even an attempt to destroy the original negative.) Fortunately neither of these things ultimately happened.  New prints were secretly made, but the 1940 version was "forced to lead a shadowy existence for several decades."

9.  Angela Lansbury was required to light up a cigarette in one scene but her on-set teacher and social worker wouldn't allow it.  They put off filming the scene until Lansbury turned 18 during production.
